Non-GI symptom - changes in my teeth

Post by Carrie »

Hi everyone. Before my LC erupted in July 2004, my teeth were pretty much normal looking. It took me a while to notice, but somewhere around 5 months into my illness and for a few months after remission, my teeth looked mottled and slightly translucent. They even felt different - food tended to stick more easily and they didn't feel as smooth, even after brushing. But now - finally - I've noticed that the mottling has almost disappeared and they look white again (not translucent any more).

I had active LC for 6 months and am now almost 6 months into remission. While ill I lost a lot of weight and what little I did eat went right through me. Do you think this affected my teeth? Nothing hurt - they just looked and felt different. Oh - and I also got a few cavities and I am supposed to be too old for that! I'm 63 - there I've finally disclosed my age (ah vanity!). Anyway maybe the teeth thing is a non-GI symptom of MC?

Love,
Carrie

Hi, Carrie,

I have CC, but I noticed the same tooth problem. You described it perfectly. It was particularly nasty because I have a porcelain fillng in one of my front teeth. Thanks to wearing braces when I was a kid. Anyway, the teeth turned a strange color, but the filling did not. It was very noticeable whenever opened my mouth. It has gradually gone away, thank heavens.

Lots of love,

Sally

Hey gals :)

I would wonder if it had to do with vitamin deficiencies.. when you're ill like we are in our worst, it's very doubtful you're getting the needed supplies of vitamins, and if you are, it'd be a wonder if you were absorbing them properly. May have been a lack of calcium?

Could be, Christine. And I was not taking calcium supplements at the time. Now I take those great big horse pills and myacalcin.

Hi Christine. Maybe it was caused by a lack of calcium. Like Sally, I wasn't taking any supplements at the time. Now I do and have been since around January.

Does anyone know what blood tests doctors take to measure calcium? Is it part of a CBC?

Love,
Carrie
