Entocort Question Please

Post by crranch »

Rick started on his entocort today (9 mgs SID ), so I'm just wondering, what is the usual time it takes before you see any results from it? And aside from leg and feet cramps, has anyone else had anything scary that we should be preparing for? Thanks!

Hi Carrie,

Some see relief in a day or so, some in a week or so, and some take a month or so. Most see results pretty quickly, (in a matter of days).

For a description of an adverse neurological reaction, read Barbaranoela's post in this thread, (it's the fourth from the top):

Thanks Sweetheart,

I have been reading what the FDA says are side effects, but know from personal experience with my DJD drugs, they usually don't tell you the whole story.

In my own experience I saw improvement on the 12th day of taking it.
As far as the feet & leg cramps, they weren't an every day occurance, and completely went away after I was able to lower my dose to 2 a day.
I have not experienced any other side effects.

Hi Dee,

Thanks! We are keeping good thoughts that this and the new diet will improve things. And Rick loved the chocolate bark last night, thanks again for the recipe.

Hi Carrie

I have been on Entocort now for 5 weeks and to be honest very few side effects, the first week I did get headaches but that has now eased back. As with most steriods oh legs and back hurt and my sleep has been badly affected. The good news they start to work within 48 hours but, Entocort is far better than the predsione!

Carrie,
I have been on Entocort for almost 7 weeks now. I noticed a difference within 48 hours (taking 9mg daily). I have only had some leg cramps and slight headaches but no other side effects, however my Entocort stopped working after 2 weeks which has been very frustrating. I'm going back on tuesday so we shall see what he finds.
Diagnosed with MC on 1/8/2008 after 7 months of flare. 2nd colonoscopy and new diagnosis of UC on 3/11/2008.

ErinD,
Just curious when you stated that the Entocort stopped working..
Do you know if you have a dairy intolerance??
I'm questioning because in my experience, even on the Entocort, if I consume dairy, it will over ride the med and give me the D.
At one point my GI had me taking Asacol & Entocort at the same time and I couldn't figure out why I was not responding to the Entocort. Did some investigating and found out that the Asacol had dairy in it...
Like I said, Just curious.....

Hi Dee,
Entocort worked great for me during the first two weeks of taking it, then slowly declined in its usefullness. I am back to how i felt before starting it. I do not consume any dairy, caffeine or gluten in my diet. I did take Asacol prior to being on Entocort and it sort of worked, sort of didn't..i didn' t realize it had diary in it!!
The doctor seems to think the slow decline just means it is not strong enough for me (the entocort) but that there is definitely inflammation as it did initially help. I am going in on Tuesday so we shall see what comes of it...

Thanks for all the feedback from everyone, Rick woke up this morning feeling bad and has been home sick with a terrible headache. At this point we are hoping that it is the Entocort and not the beginning of the flu, since Tulsa is in the middle of a flu epidemic and he deals with the public everyday, hopefully one of his students didn't bring him a bug. Guess even Purell can't stop the bugs if your trapped with the sick person in a small space...bummer

I'm curious, what about this medication causes foot and leg cramps? I ask as I get these quite often. Though mostly during swimming. But sometimes just flexing my feet can cause them to cramp severly. I don't think that it's exercise related as when I work out other body parts don't cramp up like this.

Thanks,
Mike

Just pondering here, but I wonder if it has something to do with depleted potassium levels. The Crohn's forums talk about them alot, and that Pred was the cause in some of the cases, not just entocort.

Mike,

I had severe foot and leg cramps quite often, before my gut healed, often while I was in bed - occasionally I would wake up with a really bad one. I believe that it's part of the malabsorption problem, because even a couple of years into remission, it still happened, and I would bruise very easily, (another side effect of the corticosteroids). I had the same problem - sometimes just flexing my feet brought on severe cramps. However, I have never taken any of the corticocosteroids.

Both the cramps and the bruising promptly went away, when I started taking multivitamins, plus a few megadoses of sublingual B-12. I think I posted about that a couple of years ago, on this board - I know I posted about getting rid of the bruising problem.

Hi Carrie,
I have been on Entocort for about two weeks today now. The only major side effect I seem to be experiencing is insomnia. Other than that, the Entocort seems to be doing the trick, most of the time. It didn't fully rid me of the abdominal cramps, but from what I have read, that takes a little time. I have been bothered with some foot and leg cramps, but those are bearable in exchange for the relief from the D.

I have been trying to get the sleep under control with Tylenol PM the past few nights, because I have to work 5 days a week. On the weekends I'm not going to take any, as I don't want to become dependent on something to put me to sleep.

The best part of the Entocort is that I no longer feel the need to run to the bathroom constantly, nor do I worry as I was three weeks ago. It has definitely brought me some mental, as well as physical relief of my symptoms.

Best of luck to Rick... I hope he has success with Entocort.

I have had toe and foot cramps for many, many years. It gets bad if I don't take potassium - not bad very often if I do take it. There was a period where I got leg cramps but that didn't last too long.
