The Flu

Post by greengirl78 »

My goodness, if you all have managed to avoid the nasty flu that is going around, pat yourselves on the back!

I ended up in the ER with my husband on Monday night due to his temp hitting 104, after they pumped him full of fluids and anti nauseau meds, we left around midnight... I had nursed him all weekend through this.

Waking up Tuesday AM, I found I had a temp of 102, and had to go to work. Needless to say, they sent me home, and I spent the next three days, fever induced sleep, (102-104), finally going to the doc when it hit 104 ... she said yes, you do have the flu, but you also have a sinus infection and bronchitis, so here's some Amoxicillin. Argh.

Finally feeling a little more normal, fever is down to about 100, only on day two of the Amoxicillin... will a probiotic counteract the damage the Amoxocillin will cause to my sensitive gut?

I've missed everyone! Hope you are all well -

Hi Greengirl,

Sorry to hear that you and your husband have been so sick. I wondered where you were. I hope you're both feeling much better by now.

The worst risk with the amoxicillin is that it is the antibiotic most often linked with developing C. difficile, so yes, taking a good probiotic would probably be a very good idea, beginning on the last day of the antibiotic treatment. I don't know if you are aware of it, but Sunny is battling C. diff right now, (though I don't know what caused her infection).

Good luck with the treatment.

Thank you Oma for your kind words.

Thanks Tex for your advice. I've got some Florastor (sp?) that I have been taking on and off, and I figure I'll just take it consistently right now. I am familiar with C. diffe, as my mother went through it last fall. Poor Sunny, I know how difficult it is to deal with...

Hi Greengirl,

Sorry to hear that you and your husband were so sick. The flu has been something terrible this year. My husband had it and he felt so awful. Saw on the news how it said there was a ton of cases reported in this area of the flu, also step throat and upper respitory.

I hope you both recover very quickly!

Hi Greengirl!!
Hope you and your husband are feeling better!
I take a probiotic every day and if I have to take an antibiotic I take the probotic during the whole course of the antibiotic. You just have to make sure you space the probiotic so that you're taking it 4-5 hours apart from the antibiotic.
My probiotic is normally taken in the morning before breakfast. But if I have to take an antibiotic, say , 2x a day, I take the antibiotic in the morning, then wait 4-5 hours and take the probiotic.
So far this has worked out well for me and no D from the antibiotic.

I do feel VERY fortunate that we have escaped so far (knock wood).

I hope you are both on the road to complete recovery now. I know the flu can make you so very misirable. Sorry you both had to get it.

Sorry you had a run in with that pesky flu bug, hope your feeling better soon. My sister just battled it, even though she had her flu shot this year, to bad they didn't get the correct strains of virus in this years vaccine.

Thank you all for your caring words! We are both doing much better now, I even cooked dinner for the first time tonight, in over a week.

Dee - I will time the antibiotic and probiotic as you suggest. I want to make sure to maximize the effectiveness of each.

The docs all said this flu is one of the nastiest they have seen in years. I would have to agree. I am so HAPPY to be better.

Morning Greengirl,

So happy to hear that you are both doing a lot better and sorry that you had to deal with the flu. It is especially bad this year as well as the colds that people are getting and hanging on for months.

Bet you sure enjoyed that dinner. LOL

Love, Maggie
