What foods can you handle now vs start of diet?

So I hope this might give some encouragement to those who just started the dietbecause it seems so bleak now- but there is light.

Up to one year on the diet I could NOT handle but now I can if I dont overdue it:

1. Cooked peppers
2. Sprite
3. Any Chocolate
4. Strawberries
5. Red Meat
6. Most veggies
7. Most gluten free cake mixes etc
8. Shelton's turkey sausage
9. Johnsonville Italian sausge- BE CAREFUL YOU GET THE GF KIND- BEER BRAUGHT ARE NOT GF
10. Peanutbutter
11. Ians French Toast sticks- now i eat for breakfast almost everyday- and Ians outsources the french toast to THE GLUTEN FREE PANTRY- which is awesome to me!

But really still anything with a lot of sugar or fiber tends to set me off. I have also noticed that sometimes french fries do as well and am wondering if I might cut out potato for a while.

We usually bake with our own sweets with flours from Kinnikinnick or the Gluten free Pantry because they are made a dedicated gluten free facilities. When I stopped using the pre made mixes I felt better.

I had never heard about the Ian's French Toast Sticks but will look for them.

I have been able to add back in the following in very small amounts and not more than once every couple of weeks:

Cooked Peppers
Tomatoes
A glass of white grape juice once a week.

Also, most french fries do have flour that is used to keep them separate - listed or not it is in about 90% of pre-made fries. Could be your culprit.

In french fries??? Geez I hope Safeway is not using the flour in them. They are usually good about labelling but I did notice they changed the packaging- and in some safeway fries that I KNOW have gluten in them I dont remember it beling labelled as having wheat. I think I might have just taken it for granted. LABELS CHANGE!

Tomatoes still rip me apart espc ketchup that is GF. Sometimes I can handle a few cooked sundried tomatoes but not often.

Those french toast sticks are awesome! I love them especially because they are made in a dedicated factory as compared to the other Ians products that are made in facilities using wheat, dairy, nuts etc

Most OreIda fries are safe... Check out their website.
Better yet, make fresh cut fries.. Nothing beats the taste of those.
I can eat just about anything, meats, veggies, fruits as long as I don't over do it. Very "rare", but I have tried a slice of aged swiss cheese with no ill effects.

I've also been told that most commercially prepared fries are soaked in an "enriching" solution, (to make them "healthier", and to keep them crisp longer, etc.), that contains gluten, but I've never checked that out. Does anyone know if it's true?

And then, of course, there are situations such as McDonald's famous lawsuit, when they were sued for selling French fries that were claimed to be fried in "pure vegetable oil", when in fact, the oil contained "natural seasonings", that included both beef and dairy products. Vegetarians didn't take kindly to the discovery that McDonald's had been lying to them for over 10 years. For people who are gluten sensitive, of course, the news was even worse, when they finally admitted, after the new labeling law went into effect, on Jan. 1, 2006, that their "seasoned cooking oil" contains not only dairy derivatives, but also wheat derivatives.

I checked, and sure enough, their posted ingredient list for their French fries, still shows wheat and dairy, so apparently they were not successful in proving that the seasoning was dairy and gluten free, as they had originally claimed.

P S Oh, I almost forgot - I can eat corn now, with no problems. I had cut it out for almost three years, while I was healing. I can also eat dairy products, now, without any D or similar symptoms, but I have cut it out of my diet again because it seems to cause RA symptoms for me.

I can now eat/drink the following things where I wasn't able to.

Milk, Milkshakes, Soda with sugar in it, alcohol, apple juice and other juices.

Cheese, yoghurt, cottage chese, butter.

Fiberous veggies and fruits, foods with fructose, corn, candy, chocolates.

And I think potatoes once bothered me, but now not so much.

The one thing that still seems to give me problems that I have tried:
Eggs - I don't get this one as I have mayo with real eggs in it without issue, but the last couple of times I tried eggs I had D within hours. Painful, crampy, D. Very tired. Blech. I'll probably try them again, but perhaps something organic laid by pastured hens.

The things I still haven't tried yet:
Wheat, Rye, Barley and Oats

Thank you for your posts. They are encouraging to someone like me who is wondering if I'll ever enjoy some of my forbidden foods again. Things have been looking pretty bleak and the future has looked even bleaker.

I find it very interesting that you have a problem with eggs now and when you were tested by Enterolab you weren't intolerant to eggs (I looked at your journal). I wasn't intolerant to eggs by the testing either so I have been eating the fool out of them.

I can eat anything------the only thing that bothered me was SORBITOL--but now it doesnt bother me @ all???

I do believe that my MCC was caused by all the years that retired GP had me on MEDS for MVP which I DIDNT have----That was another *dumb* mistake I made---I never liked him BUT went along with the family---that is ONE member of the family--- :lol: :lol:

Pat, yeah I find it strange as well. Enterolab showed nothing as well as the IgG blood test. Perhaps it was a bad batch. I haven't worked up the courage to try again as it wasn't fun. I want to start eating them again as they're a good balance to the other protein.

I don't think it's a sulphur issue as I eat other sulphur containing foods, it's not an allergy issue. What else gives folks problems with eggs? Bad eggs is all else I can think of right now.

Mike,

Bear in mind that the Enterolab tests, (like all other food allergy/intolerance tests), only test for one specific antibody for each food type, (usually either the one connected with the protein mostly likely to cause a reaction, or the one that is present in the largest amount in the item in question). IOW, there are numerous other proteins in eggs to which you could be intolerant, (though that would be extremely rare, of course).

The problem you experience with them could possibly be connected with some sort of enzyme deficiency, caused by a transient event in the gut, (similar to lactose intolerance that is often/usually experienced during any significant enteritis event, due to a temporary deficiency of the lactase enzyme.

Or, you could be having the same problem that I sometimes have, when I really don't know what to pin a reaction on, so I have to pick something that doesn't have a good alibi. LOL.
