Apparently, the cold temperatures in winter really do cause viruses to be more infectious, because the lower temperatures "toughen" the "shell" of viruses, allowing them to survive much longer.

So it's not just our imagination, after all, and it's not just due to the closer confinement that often comes with cold weather.
