Fooled again!
Hi Good Buddies!
Just a note to remind ourselves once again how vigilant we have to be. I had been having some diarrhea over the past few months and was chalking it up to that truckload of antibiotics I had to take over the past year for the chronic sinus infection.
WRONG. For some years now I have been buying Classic Lay's potato chips. (I don't have a sweet tooth but DO have a "salt" tooth - LOL!) I try to limit the amount I eat - just a few when I get the urge. Anyway, the Lay's I was buying always had just potatoes, salt, and sunflower oil, which I seem to tolerate fairly well. Last week I happened to look at the ingredient list and was stunned to see "sunflower or corn oil". I really can't do corn oil well. I have switched to another brand (original Ruffles) and the diarrhea is subsiding nicely.
We can never let down our guard........we have to continually check and recheck ingredient lists.
Sigh.
Love,
Polly

Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.
Hi Polly,
Down here in Texas, I've seen cottonseed oil listed, also. Cottonseed prices have doubled in the past few months, so that's probably why they switched to corn. Every time they switch oils, it's for health reasons, of course, (their financial health). LOL.
Corn chips don't seem to bother me these days, but about a month or two ago, I tried some of the Classic Lay's Potato Chips, and had D the next day. I thought that was just a fluke, so I tried it again, and the same thing happened, so I don't buy Lay's Potato chips anymore. This makes me wonder if maybe something might be missing from the label, (IOW, overlooked).
Love,
Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Morning,
I have also had a bad reaction to Lay's recently and I am a rare eater of chips. Corn does not seem to bother me so I am with Tex in thinking something else might be missing from the label. Maybe just running them on a non-GF dedicated line. However, it seems that no matter what I eat I am having a problem. Great for the waistline but bad for the psyche.

I have found i can't eat any of the Lays chips that have the big sunflower on the package. I can tolerate their Baked versions of the chips though which don't use that oil, even though they are not quite as tasty.
Diagnosed with MC on 1/8/2008 after 7 months of flare. 2nd colonoscopy and new diagnosis of UC on 3/11/2008.
I am seriously trying to not eat corn or rice and so I have been eating Lays and also recently noticed that they are using corn. I went to the store today thinking, Ok, I'll just get Ruffles like Polly suggested. Same thing, corn. The only potato chips I found without corn was Kettle. They are heavier and seem greasier. I bought them anyway. I'm gonna do this, no corn or rice added to no gluten, soy, or casein. I feel I have to give this a really good try.

Pat,
My local HFS usually stocks chips made from organically-grown sweet potatoes. I've forgotten brand names, and the type of oil used, but I ate them occasionally when I was avoiding all corn derivatives, (including corn oil). They're kind of pricey, though. The flavor wasn't half bad - the only thing that kept me from eating more of them was the fact that they were very low on salt, and I crave salty chips.

I hope these work for you, but I seemed to react to these chips more than the Lays back when. Haven't tried them again. I suspected cross contaminiation with Kettle chips. Which is too bad as I wanted to support a local company. There's on in Salem, Oregon.Pat wrote:I am seriously trying to not eat corn or rice and so I have been eating Lays and also recently noticed that they are using corn.
