Fooled again!

Post by Polly »

Hi Good Buddies!

Just a note to remind ourselves once again how vigilant we have to be. I had been having some diarrhea over the past few months and was chalking it up to that truckload of antibiotics I had to take over the past year for the chronic sinus infection.

WRONG. For some years now I have been buying Classic Lay's potato chips. (I don't have a sweet tooth but DO have a "salt" tooth - LOL!) I try to limit the amount I eat - just a few when I get the urge. Anyway, the Lay's I was buying always had just potatoes, salt, and sunflower oil, which I seem to tolerate fairly well. Last week I happened to look at the ingredient list and was stunned to see "sunflower or corn oil". I really can't do corn oil well. I have switched to another brand (original Ruffles) and the diarrhea is subsiding nicely.

We can never let down our guard........we have to continually check and recheck ingredient lists.

Sigh.

Love,

Polly

Hi Polly,

Down here in Texas, I've seen cottonseed oil listed, also. Cottonseed prices have doubled in the past few months, so that's probably why they switched to corn. Every time they switch oils, it's for health reasons, of course, (their financial health). LOL.

Corn chips don't seem to bother me these days, but about a month or two ago, I tried some of the Classic Lay's Potato Chips, and had D the next day. I thought that was just a fluke, so I tried it again, and the same thing happened, so I don't buy Lay's Potato chips anymore. This makes me wonder if maybe something might be missing from the label, (IOW, overlooked).

Love,
Tex

Morning,

I have also had a bad reaction to Lay's recently and I am a rare eater of chips. Corn does not seem to bother me so I am with Tex in thinking something else might be missing from the label. Maybe just running them on a non-GF dedicated line. However, it seems that no matter what I eat I am having a problem. Great for the waistline but bad for the psyche.

Love, Maggie

I have found i can't eat any of the Lays chips that have the big sunflower on the package. I can tolerate their Baked versions of the chips though which don't use that oil, even though they are not quite as tasty.

FYI....just got on Frito Lay's website and I was unaware of the fact that Lays and Ruffles are both made by them....just thought you might want to know in case they start messing with the Ruffles brand also....

Well, knock on wood, I haven't been having any problems with Lays chips at all. In fact I've been eating them for quite some time. I used to have problems, that I think were attributed to them, but no more as far as I can tell.

Mike,

Hahahahaha. I guess that proves that Polly is right, (regarding her mentioning "That Mikey, he'll eat anything"). LOL.

Seriously, though, I started having trouble with them about the time they started pushing the sunflower oil, as Erin mentioned.

I am seriously trying to not eat corn or rice and so I have been eating Lays and also recently noticed that they are using corn. I went to the store today thinking, Ok, I'll just get Ruffles like Polly suggested. Same thing, corn. The only potato chips I found without corn was Kettle. They are heavier and seem greasier. I bought them anyway. I'm gonna do this, no corn or rice added to no gluten, soy, or casein. I feel I have to give this a really good try.

I also found Veggie Crisps that didn't have corn. Bought those too.

Pat,

My local HFS usually stocks chips made from organically-grown sweet potatoes. I've forgotten brand names, and the type of oil used, but I ate them occasionally when I was avoiding all corn derivatives, (including corn oil). They're kind of pricey, though. The flavor wasn't half bad - the only thing that kept me from eating more of them was the fact that they were very low on salt, and I crave salty chips.

I hope these work for you, but I seemed to react to these chips more than the Lays back when. Haven't tried them again. I suspected cross contaminiation with Kettle chips. Which is too bad as I wanted to support a local company. There's on in Salem, Oregon.

I found Lays Natural thick cut sea salted chips that only have potatoes, sunflower oil, and sea salt.

The Lays Natural thick cut ones are the only ones that I purchase.
No problems with them.
