Bacteria for Breakfast

Post by sunny »

Now that is a catchy title for a book, no?  I just got this one...its's about probiotics and I learned about it on the c-diff site. The author is a pharmacist with a personal interest in c-diff because of her son who had c-diff. It is thorough and scholarly as well as readable.....each chapter is followed by the research. Based on the c-diff recommendations and then verified by her book, I am taking culturelle (lactobacillus GG) which will colonize in the gut and help replace the c-diff and also survives the trip thru tummy acid.. and also Florastor 1,000 mg which competes with c-diff and inhibits its replication. Kelly Karpa (author) also raves about vsl#3 which saved the life of a toddler with c-diff. i am getting that also for when this round of vanco is done so i can try & win the race to see which can populate the gut first...remaining c-diff spores which "hatch" or the probiotics....the key is to eat as much yogurt, kefir, & probiotics as you can. I don't react to dairy so think i will be OK....I am also taking colestid which is like cholestramine , which is an absorbing agent to which the c-diff toxins A&B attach ....however, meds & antibiotics also will attach so have to time the taking of that.
Kelly's book is fascinating because of the research which shows the effects of pro-biotics on allergies and food insensitivities and helping folks to be able to eat dairy again , for example. He son & hubby were "cured" of their asthma thru probiotics. WIll post more aobut my timing of all these and get some "outside the box" ideas for dosing. gotta run to Phys. Therapy.

Hi Sunny,

Well, I have to admit that your subject line caught my eye. LOL.

I love the proactive approach you're taking against the C. diff. You're really lettin' the hammer down on it this time around, and I have no doubt you're gonna knock it out.

The general tone of your post suggests that you're continuing to feel better, too, which is certainly good to "see". Thanks for all the tips on probiotics that are recommended for C. diff, also. That's valuable information to have available here, since C. diff is always a threat for anyone with digestive system issues, (which includes all of us, of course).

Thanks,
Tex

Hmmmm!
Have to say that I found this to be interesting.
I have taken a probiotic, faithfully, for 2 years now.
In my experience and knowing that 70% of our immunity is in our guts,
I take 2 every morning before breakfast.
Now, if I start to feel like I may be getting a cold, I have upped the dose to 3 of them for a few days, and I've ended up with no cold.
If I am prescribed an antibiotic, of which I try to stay clear of, if it is at all possible, I take the antibiotic in the morning, then wait 4 hours and take 3 of the probiotic. This approach has kept me from getting the D while taking the antibiotic or a yeast infection.
I'll be anxious to hear more about this.

Love

Hi Sunny

Happy to see things are improving for you, so good to hear you sounding more upbeat, yes in the last few months I have started taking a probiotic each day and feel a great deal better for doing so.

Sunny,

Sounds like you will be an expert on probiotics before this is all over. You've learned a lot in a short period of time and I believe you are on the right road to recovery. Keep us informed!

Sunny,

You sound so upbeat and being proactive can do that to you.

Keeping an eye on your posts and maybe this is something I need to incorporate for myself. Will keep an eye on your success.

Love, Maggie
