According to this research report, taking antioxidants in order to prolong life, apparently has the opposite effect, which is not good news to anyone taking beta-carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin E, and hoping to live longer as a result. Vitamin C and selenium did not seem to show an increased mortality risk, but obviously, more research needs to be done.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
I agree about the more research for sure.
One thought about anti-oxidants and why they might be harmful. Is that certain functions of the body need to use oxidation to work, therefore if we limit the oxidation too much then health might be affected in negative terms.
Fighting off bacteria is one form of oxidation that we need. Too much or too little oxidation is bad.

Hi tex, I was making fun about the blueberry post but I eat them and alot of anti oxident foods as well as take them in pill form. I also found eating this deer meat (very lean) is better for me. Doctor told me to keep eating it. Other than deer meat, we eat deer sausage ( I eat it sparingly) and chicken. Lots veggies. For some reason I can tolerate more veggies than a year ago. Maybe eating better has healed things enough to tolerate more. But I am caucious with it.

I don't believe that antioxidants that occur naturally in food, are very likely to cause any problems. It's when we take "pills" based on antioxidants that we are likely to get into trouble. Food is natural, and our digestive systems were evolved to get all of our nutritional needs from food, (plus sunlight and water). Pills are not natural, and no one on earth has a digestive system that was evolved to extract their nutritional needs from pills, or from any other "nutraceutical" products.
While it's certainly true that we do seem to be able to extract certain nutritional requirements from "pills", no one can really be sure what else is going on with body chemistry when we do that. In a sense, taking "pills" is very much like eating GMO foods. When we do that, we are trying to derive benefits from the things that we eat, by means of an "unnatural" process. IOW, we are trying to "exploit" our digestive system, to obtain benefits that would not normally be available in the foods that we eat.
