Rice dream milk...

Post by crranch »

Okay, am I just sleep deprived from waiting for this new cow to calf, or do I remember someone saying that Rice Dream milk caused issues for MC patients? I was just on their website and they state that their shelf stable boxed rice milk is CF/SF/DF/GF....just wondering if that might be an option for Rick to use on his rice cereal...since I have not been able to track down any hemp seed milk in this area....if it isn't, then I will need to order some hemp seed milk online....Thanks!!!

Back out to the barn for the continued drama of " Cow Watch" :???:

Hi Carrie,

Back when I was trying to claw my way out of the pit known as MC, I used Rice Dream for several months. I never could prove it, but I always suspected that it made me sick, so I stopped using it. A few months later, I found out that barley malt is used to initiate the fermentation process that they use on the rice, but it was not listed as an ingredient, because, (like McDonald's, with the gluten-containing oil that they use for their fries), they claim that the barley malt is removed before the process is completed. Since 100% removal is pretty much impossible, many/most celiacs didn't believe them, and I believe at one time, (if my memory is not playing tricks on me), they noted on their label that the product contains less than 0.002%, which just happens to be 20 parts per million, which just happens to be the legal threshold for claiming a product to be gluten-free, according to the Codex Alimentarius, which is used in Europe, and many parts of the world, (but not the United States). I haven't checked their label lately, so I don't know what it says, nor do I know if they have changed their process to somehow avoid the malting process, (which must be started with barley malt - there are no other ways to do it). For many years I just did without, but now I order hempmilk online, once or twice a year.

Does anyone know if that disclaimer about less than 0.002% gluten is still on the label?

Hugs,
Tex

P S Good luck on the "Cow Watch". If that line of thunderstorms that's supposed to pass through here in the early morning hours, reaches all the way up into your neighborhood, it will probably "get the job done", things being what they usually are, especially if the weather reaches severe levels.

I didn't find that disclaimer on their site about the barley malt, I was just looking at their FAQ's on allergens in which they made the claim of DF,SF,CF,GF, but I haven't looked at an actual box of it yet. Since there was barley malt in the process at one time, I don't think I want to trust Rick's stomach to trying it. He still hasn't made any real progress since adding the pred with the entocort, and I don't want to give him anything that might make him even worse.........just a mine field out there at every turn. Thanks for you input Sweetheart, these sleepless nights on "cow watch" have made doing much research impossible.......I'm like a shark now, I stop moving...I'm a goner...

Hugs,
Carrie

Back to the barn...the first line of storms didn't get her to pop, but she was agitated and up and down, so maybe this next line of them will do the job....I hate first time heifers...to many things can go wrong if your not watching them.......

I checked out the Rice Dream in the store the other day. The original version still has the barley malt noted in very small print on the box. However, they have a new organic version that no longer lists the barley malt. Maybe that is safe??? Good luck with the cow watch - may you soon be able to announce the birth!

Hugs,

Polly

Thanks for the rice dream box update.....since the cow has decided that these storms weren't severe enough to warrant popping out this calf, and then the neighbor dogs and coyotes started up, so she called this whole thing off for the time being. gotta love heifers, if everything isn't to their liking, they can just cross their legs and wait til it is.... .....the store run was going to be put off for another day or two anyway.......

I hope to have a calf announcement one of these days.....that would mean that I can get some sleep again.... :???:

Hi Carrie!
I wonder how Rick would do with the Vance's Dari-Free milk?? It comes in a powder form that you mix with water.
It is potato based and cheaper than the rice or hempseed milks.
Maybe another option for him.

Thanks for the idea Dee, I've never heard of it before, I'll check into it right now.......Have time to get a little computer work done today. My heifer has called off calving for the time being....wish I could convince her to quit being a drama queen and get it over with, so I can go back to my normal schedule....

We discussed this back in September. Here's a link that I posted then:

The discussion is here:

I have to admit that I have mixed emotions about drinking Rice Dream. It seems that it's easier on me than homemade rice milk. I'm wondering if that's due to the processes used to make Rice Dream more digestible. I tried the Hemp milk for a week, but I had problems. I can't say for sure if it was the Hemp milk though, since I'm not in remission yet.

Thanks for the links Gloria, looks like rice dream may not be worth trying for Rick. And the Vance's Dari Free had Carageenen in it, which we are trying to keep out of his diet......at this point, coconut milk is what I am using in cooking and to make cheese with.......at least we have it to use. I have read about others having trouble with the hempseed milk also, so I'm not sure I want to risk that kind of expense to order it online, in case it is yet another thing that he can't have....my family has a joke about us supplying everyone with extra food. I buy it, then if Rick can't have it, we pass it on to someone in the family..... once again, no easy solutions....... :???:

I had emailed Hain about the Rice dream milk quite some time ago, finally got a response from them....So they do use a barley enzyme for processing...

Carrie

Thank you for taking the time to contact us regarding our Rice Dream Beverage. We apologize for the delay in our reply and appreciate your patience. We strive to maintain the highest quality products and we appreciate your patronage.

We use a barley enzyme in the rice processing of the product to bring out the natural sugars, the enzyme is then discarded. The product is tested after each production run and it is tested to be gluten free. We have a gluten free label on the front of the box. They also will say soy free, lactose and dairy free on the side of the box. Many times corn will be part of the natural flavors if you happen to purchase any of the flavored beverages.
Thank you for your continued support. If we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact us at 1-800-434-4246, Monday through Friday from 7AM - 5PM Mountain Time.
Sincerely,

Carrie,

I didn't think that they had actually changed anything, (except the label, LOL), but I was just guessing. Thanks for confirming my suspicions. I'm sure that they really feel that since their product is "legally" gluten free, it actually is safe, (and it probably is, for most celiacs), but it's probably not safe for a few, and I wouldn't drink it myself, because if I ingest enough "low gluten" products, on a regular basis, and some of them "crowd" the limits, sooner or later, I'll accumulate an adequate dose, and I'll be headed to "Poop City". LOL.

Thanks for posting that.

Don't you just love corperate America, just change the label, and make it say what you want....no problem..

No problem Sweetheart, glad to be able to add a little to the group detective work around here, sniffing out the hidden scary things lurking around every corner.
