Not Feeling Well Today

Post by ErinD »

Well my 5 weeks on prednisone is not working well today...I have been doing great on my first tapered dose (he has me on 20mg for the past 3 weeks as my first taper, in which case i have felt great) until the past few days. I started noticing more bowel movements during the day, some blood in them, that pain in my stomach and last night i had the full blown up all night pain, diarrhea, nausea, etc....

Could the prednisone be losing its touch? Is it just an 'off' few days and give it another chance or should i give the GI a call and tell him what is going on?
Diagnosed with MC on 1/8/2008 after 7 months of flare. 2nd colonoscopy and new diagnosis of UC on 3/11/2008.

Morning Erin,

So sorry to hear that you are not feeling well and I would definitely call the doc since it does not seem like you should be having blood in your stool and just to really tune the doc in to how you are feeling.

Love, Maggie

I do hope this improves for you.

Hi Erin,

I agree with Barbara and Maggie, that you should call your GI doc, if you haven't done so already. You appear to be having a full-blown UC reaction. Hopefully, he can suggest a way to nip it in the bud, quickly.

I still don't understand why your GI doc doesn't have you phasing in Entocort, as you are tapering the Prednisone dosage. That would maintain a stable level of corticosteroids in your system, and should prevent what is happening now. Did you have an adverse reaction to Entocort? I don't have near as much confidence in Asacol being able to allow you to maintain remission, even if you were to successfully reach that stage in the Prednisone regimend, (which is now obviously in question). By all indications, Entocort is basically as safe for long-term use as Asacol, and if Prednisone is capable of establishing remission, then Entocort should be capable of maintaining it.

I wish you the best of luck, and please keep us updated.

Tex

Just talked to my GI docs nurse. He is on vacation this week but she took my symptoms and spoke to his backup and they agreed it sounded like the typical UC Flare Up. They said to go back up to the 30mg of Pred for the weekend to get it back under control and to call back on Monday to speak to my regular GI doc when he returns and go from there. I'll definitely ask him about the Entocort as well, as i was on that before and didn't have any bad reactions to it (just wasn't strong enough). Thanks for that tidbit!

Thanks for all your advice!
