Flying while on Prednisone...
OK, dumb question for you. Everyone says that when you are on prednisone to try and stay away from sick people as much as possible since your immune system is suppressed. However i am leaving saturday for our vacation and of course will be flying (oh ya, germ capsule!). SO...what safeguards if any should i use to try and avoid any germs? I am nervous because in our area the flu is still around (many schools have actually closed due to outbreaks). My mom thinks i should wear a face mask on the plan, others have just said bring lots of purell...any suggestions on how i can try to remain healthy?
Diagnosed with MC on 1/8/2008 after 7 months of flare. 2nd colonoscopy and new diagnosis of UC on 3/11/2008.
Hi Erin!
Happy to hear that you are feeling better.
I'm on Entocort which supposedly makes one more susceptible to catching bugs from others, etc...
When we flew to Florida in February, I did wear a face mask on the flight.
And like you stated I always have and use Purell all of the time. I have a small bottle in my purse, a pump gel one in my van. If I go shopping, grocery store, the first thing that I do when I get back into my van, is use the gel.
The only other thing is washing your hands....

Hi Erin!
I agree with what you and Dee have said. I would also recommend supplementing vitamin D - at least 2000 mg. a day.......or more if you are not getting any natural sun. Of course, maybe you will be in the sun on vacation. Where are you going?
There is some evidence that 2000 mg. /day may help prevent the flu from taking hold (even if exposed).
Happy trip!
