Ener G "Granola Bars"!!!!
Ok - so last night I was grocery shopping and in the "health foods aisle", I found some GREAT new products!!! Most by EnerG.. I bought a couple, but the Granola Bars are amazing! I think I would eat these even if I could eat anything in the world. Here's the ingredients:
Filbert paste (dry roasted filberts, sugar), organic evaporated cane juice, resistant corn starch, diced walnuts, diced almonds, diced pecans, crisp rice cereal (brown rice & honey), palm oil, Egg Replacer [(tapioca flour, potato starch, leavening (calcium lactate{from corn}, calcium carbonate, glucono delta lactone{from corn}), cellulose gum, carbohydrate gum)], orange peel (orange peel with sugar and oil of orange added), salt, filtered water.
The ONLY questionable ingredient in my case is the "resistant corn starch". First of all, WHAT does "resistant" mean? The other thing is altho it mentions some ingredients with "lactone" or "lactate" in them, it does say it's dairy free. Anyway, the only issue with these I see is if we have issues with nuts or corn. Otherwise, I'd HIGHLY recommend them!! They're a little spendy (I believe I paid $6 for about 10 of them) but they're large bars and can be split up into sections that are "cookie-size". The best taste comparison I can think of is they taste like slightly doughy oatmeal cookies. mmmmmmmmmmmm

Christine-
I bought these once, but never ate them!! I was too intimidated to open the package - plus I'd found some of the Ener-G stuff to be kind of yukky - like their rice bread By the time I actually thought I might try them - they were long past the expiration date so I tossed 'em! Bummer I missed something good!! I have a box of their granola on my shelf too - haven't tried it. I guess it's partly psychological - if I eat it and hate it, I get bummed that there are no *good* options - whereas if it sits on my shelf there is hope for a reasonable facsimile I'm such a nerd!!

LOL, I understand your complex tho :) I do the same.. I also bought these cookies, can't recall the brand, but it SAID they were the BEST! So I got 'em home and tried 'em and they're just NOT the same. No cookie will do like a wheat flour cookie, I guess.
But yeah, you really should give these granola bars another try. They taste incredible :) They're not pretty to LOOK at. I know what you mean about the rice bread. But you know, I guess they probably did the best they could with what they had.. rice bread will never be good, no matter what. To me, it tasted like I'd imagine styrofoam must taste! Lol
Anyway! Give it a try! :)

Mary,
I eat the EnerG tapioca bread exclusively now. I've found I prefer "replacement" type foods that are tapioca based. You have to toast it first otherwise the texture isn't right, but lightly toasted and its fine. Makes for good toast and peanut butter (or nutella...a non-confirmed gf product), or fluffernutters, or just a plain ham and cheese sandwich (my repetoire of bread meals).

Hi Christine,
They are a fairly new product for EnerG and I just discovered them about a month ago and love them too. They have replaced my Enviro Kids rice bars for breakfast.
I also found a bakery that only sells wholesale and they are located within a short driving distance of me. Gluten free, egg free, etc. and they make everything from individual fruit tarts, pecan pies and cheescake to full size ones. Their brownies are great. However, I want to be able to go to their bakery and today tried to find a telephone number for them so I could call and they don't have a published # for the public Now that's a real bummer - they could make a killing off of us.
Love, Maggie

Mary,
LOL. I do the same thing. I'm constantly buying new discoveries in HF stores, and then I put them somewhere to wait until I get up the nerve to try 'em, and, of course, I forget about them until they get too old to eat. I feel so bad about that habbit, that I've just about stopped buying new things to try.

Granola bars and bread
Hi all,
Really glad to hear about those granola bars. That's actually a better price than the Enviro. PB Bars, isn't it, mostly because they're a bigger size from how you described them.
Hope WFs carries those as I'm supposed to go tomorrow. 5 percent of all profits for all four stores here will go toward support of the local celiac support groups activities.
I've gotten a few loaves of the EnerG yeast-free bread. What I was told to do to enhance the bread was to warm it up first, before throwing it in the toaster oven. Wasn't half bad as a hamburger bun.
Trick is to watch it closely, and as soon as an edge gets a tiny bit brown, take it out pronto or it will burn.
So far, that's the only thing I use bread for, but I have a plan to use gf veggies, meat, and pizza sauce to make a cheeseless individual pizza, just haven't gotten around to that yet.
Noticed that the package says not to freeze, but then inside or somewhere else, it said it didn't "have to be frozen" which changes the meaning, somewhat.
I believe that the first time I used it, a short time after being frozen, it wasn't too bad, but later, I couldn't break the stuff apart, so I'd advise separating it before freezing it, if you HAVE to freeze it, and storing it in the amount you'd normally use at a time, say, in a freezer bag.
Perhaps it would be better to just try a piece in the freezer the first time, before perhaps ruining the whole loaf, just to see if you like it as well after it's been frozen. I ended up having to defrost the entire loaf in the microwave the second time I used it out of the freezer, thus the warning!
Let me know if you come up with any other ideas, please.
Yours, Luce
