Cars/extended warranty question

Post by Lucy »

Hi all,

The warranty on my car runs out on July 1, so I'm seriously considering buying an extended one.
I'm going to the dealer tomorrow as I can't get anyone to return my phone calls there.

Do you think I could buy one right there at the dealer's without too much hassle?

By the way, I have a Nissan.

Thanks.
Yours, Luce

There are different kinds of warranties to be aware of that. Some will only cover you at a specific dealership and some are nationwide.

Depending on the age of your car the cost could be high at this point. I bought a 6 year warranty when I got my Honda and it was about $1600 in October of 2000.

Worth it, do you think?

Post by Lucy »

Grannyh,

Do you think it was worth what you paid for it in terms of savings on repairs?

This car is a 2002, and the three year warranty (big stuff, I think) runs out the first.

It's only got a few hundred miles over 15,000 mi, so SHOULDN'T really be having all that much trouble with it for a while, particularly no more than I drive it, but one never knows, and it seems as though even the little things cost several hundred bucks anymore.

My mechanic is the one who told me he thought they were well worth what you pay for em, and that I should see what I could get before mine runs out.

What you quoted is about right, according to his wild guess. Said if it's $800 for a 3 yr warranty, that would be a good deal.

What happens if you decide to sell the car before the warranty's up?
That would make the car 9 yrs old when a six year one was up.

If you get a national one, what happens if you're on the road somewhere and there's not a dealer nearby? I'm assuming that "national" just means dealers.
Is that what that means?

Thanks.

By National.... Imeant that any approved shop can do the repair work anywhere in the US. Some warranties only are good at the dealership where you purchased the warranty.

I don't know what happens if you still have time on your warranty and you sell the car.... I keep my cars til the warranty runs out... and I always get the longest warranty available. My husband knows squat about keeping a car running....LOL

As to the value of an extended warranty.. I have no idea.. I have had to use some and saved a bundle and other cars have been dreams to own.

My car has low mileage as well. It will be 5 years old in October and has 27000 miles on it. Maybe when I get rid of it I will say "Low mileage. Owned by a little old lady who couldn't get farther than 2 blocks from a bathroom."

Don't know anything about extended warranties, Luce, because I never buy them for anything - I figure if I buy a good product to begin with I shouldn't need one. I am on my 2nd Honda in 16 years and have never had a problem. I am probably just lucky.

Granny, you are a hoot! Two blocks from a bathroom! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Love,

Polly

Granny, you crack me up! Low milage!

When I got my first car, it was used but only 2 years old. Because it was still under 36,000 I got the remaining manufacturers warrenty (36000 or 3 years).

I got an extended with my Subaru that I just got last fall. But I haven't had to fix anything yet, despite the fact I've got 16,000 on it already! Lots of miles for work. Several of our jobs are up in Burlington and thats 200 miles round trip from the office. I do get milage paid though so I get some nice little expense checks. Meanwhile, Geoff has had his car about 2 weeks longer than me, and he has only put 5,000 on his (a little less...it was 53xxx when we got it and he just hit 58000 yesterday).

Just another thought LUce, if you are having trouble getting anyone at the dealership to call you back, I'd be tempted to call Nissan Corporate. You might get a better rate that way because you don't have to pay whatever commission the dealership gets. And tell them, getting calls back has been a pain.

We purchased an extended warranty from a guy in our area that we found on the internet. It cost about 700.00 if I remember correctly (this was several years ago). It was a little more of a hassle than if you get one from a dealership. We did get our money back in one trip to the garage for a repair. BUT, a year or so later that guy was arrested for selling the warranties and not turning the money over to the warranty company. Why we were lucky and he didn't keep our money I will never know!

Didn't think of calling the dealer!! Probably wouldn't have known how to do it though.

Due to the fact that these are such good cars, I went ahead and got one that covers everything, other than things you'd typically wear out or ruin if you didn't drive carefully or the streets have potholes, etc. -- things like belts and break shoes, mufflers, shocks, etc. -- maintenance, guess you'd say.

This one goes for 7 yrs/70,000 miles. Car just has 15,300, so that's about 55,000 I can go in the next 4 yrs. I got the one with no deductible since there wasn't all that much difference. There are just so many little electrical things that can go wrong, even on these good, reliable Japanese cars that if, toward the end of the next four years, I have a few little things to repair, the difference will easily pay for the additional charge to remove the deductible. With medical things, I generally prefer a high deductible cause I don't plan on being sick, but this deal looked better than the 50 dollar deductible for each visit.

Nice thing is that if it's something that's covered by the warranty, then think 100 miles max is covered for towing if it's needed. Also, there's rental car coverage for a few days for the same. The dealer has a service where they'll pick up your car which might become necessary if no one happened to be off work when I had to take the car in.

Really needed to go ahead and get this done today (Wed.) since tomorrow we're going to a lunch with someone who shares the office with my sister. The office crew INSISTED they were gunna feed us stuff we could eat or bust. Got some stuff to take along, like Amy's BBQ sauce and some chips n stuff. Mom's going too, so betcha we're not there too long. Will hafta get some salt down her first thing tomorrow as her BP's just aren't staying up, even with the vasoconstrictor.

Sis said that there's a window overlooking the pool there in the den of her home, so that will be how we'll keep Mom cool, but probably won't be there much longer than to eat and chat a bit.

Sis and I won't swim, but sure was tempted to get a swim suit this weekend. Now, what do I nened a swim suit for anyway!?! Someday...

Katy, which Subaru do you have? My good friend has her second Forrester, and loves em. She always wanted one, and wasn't disappointed. She's one who really puts the miles on a car!

OK, thanks for your responses.
