I have been outside nearly all evening watching all the birds. We have a new bunch of humming birds. One has a black head and is brown and green, one has a red patch on his throat with a wide white ring and a small red ring right after the white ring and he's green every where else. Then we have brown with a small amount of green Three of them are real small. Do you know what kind they are?

We have seen a lot of hummingbirds in Texas and Arizona. At home hummingbird identification is easy because we have only one species--the ruby-throated hummingbird.

We are still in Atlanta helping with grandkids.

Morning Oma,

Sorry off the board for the weekend. Without actually seeing the Hummers I would have a hard time being accurate. I think the first you mention might be either an Allen's or a Broad Tail and the second one is a real toss up but gut says Black Chin. Had a hard time with the white rings and actually tryig to figure their placement. Haven't seen a one here yet and the only one we great is Ruby-Throated Hummingbird.

I have yet to see a hummer this season but I expect it will be any day. The native red honeysuckle is starting to bloom and they love it! I have planted native plants that hummers love (like bee balm, cardinal flower) that bloom at different times throughout the season. Since I have planted these favorite hummer plants, I have stopped putting out a hummer feeder. I found that they won't use it if the plants are in bloom! Like Maggie, we have only the ruby-throated ones here.
