Mama called the doctor and the doctor said...

no more blaming your problems on wheat and dairy. O.k., I didn't call him but I did go into see him. After explaining that all of my symptoms returned, he advised seeing what happens if I up my welchol to 4 (625 mg., each) a day and take a probiotic daily. I got the welchol - $61/month. In addition to being prescribed for post gallbladder patients, this medication is also prescribed for lowering cholesterol, so I might benefit from that. I'll go this round but I'm not interested in spending that much a month. We'll see. The journey continues. It helps having a sunny spring day today!
Polly, I said to the doc, "Don't you find it interesting that we're the only species to drink milk past infancy?" He said he'd thought of that. (and I read into the furrowed wrinkles on his brow - "Stay off the internet.")
Hope you all have a great week!

Becky,

Well, at least he had thought about the milk issue! We'll give him a little credit. But not much. LOL! Hope you find some relief with the higher dose (that's a lot of $$$$ per month). Just to be on the safe side, you might look for a probiotic that doesn't contain milk products.

Love,

Polly

It wil be interesting to see if upping the Welchol dose help.
If it does, I then think that the calcium supplement Caltrate would give you the same benefit and be less expensive..
Does anyone else care to share their thoughts on my theory??

The main side effect listed for Welchol is constipation, which is reported in 11 % of patients using it.

Yep, another well trained Dr. Get rid of the symptom and somehow you're cured. :( I'm all for helping someone getting through a disease by helping with their symptoms, but having this be the main course of action. Pathetic. Sorry for the rant.

I agree Mike!!
In my own experience, at one point, I was prescribed Questran, which is also a cholesterol drug, but for some it's used for diarrhea. It DID NOT mask my symptoms.

Hi Sunny,
Welchol is also prescribed for people who have had their gallbladders removed who might have excess bile causing the problems in the colon. My cholesterol has been up a bit in the last year so I'm glad that I know I'm getting at least one benefit from this "trial". :???:

Becky!!
Did you have your gallbladder removed??
If so, I feel for you.
You have the bile dumping and MC causing the D.

Yep, I had it removed a month after my first daughter was born. The doc thought she must have been pushing on it, causing it to kink and have stones build up - or something or other. That was 12 years ago.

My choices from my doc are Lialda or Entocort......I said I'd like some time to make the decision. She said fine and to use the internet.

One of those drug says alopecia possible side effect and the other says hair loss! That is too scary to me and the last thing I want. I got off all my other drugs that may cause hair loss except Pravachol (I never checked Zetia.)

I am on Welchol and it is helping pretty well.
