Antibiotics and MC

Post by hazel »

Hi all,
I think I read a while back that some of you had bad reactions to taking antibiotics. I haven't taken any since I got CC so I don't know how to predict my reaction. I need knee replacement (ala Momster) and one of the things I worry about is having a flare-up of CC because you have to take antibiotics when you have your knee replaced. (In fact, after joint replacement you have to take antibiotics every time you go to the dentist or do anything that could allow bacteria to invade your body, I guess because they could infect your new joint area?) It would be a bummer to be laid up with a new knee and have big D. On the other hand, maybe some of you have taken antibiotics with no ill result. I know I'm allergic to penicillin, so it would have to be some other drug. Please tell me your experiences with antibiotics. Thanks.

Hi Kathy - I am also allergic to pennicilin and can only take Z-Pak without problems. I have tried others but seem to have problems.

Everyone reacts differently so maybe you will have good luck with another kind.

I also have been taking a probiotic for awhile - I wonder if that helps even out the problems.

Good luck with your knee replacement!

Thanks, Margie. I will ask about Z-pak. I looked it up and it is also called azithromycin. I haven't totally made up my mind if I am going to have the knee replaced. Some days it isn't so bad. Also I am a chicken for major surgery!

Hiya Kathy,

I am also allergic to penicillin. Since MC, I have had two courses of antibiotics (Both with azithromycin or Z-Pak) without any problems.

I do think some are worse than others. I remember reading that the tetracyclines could CAUSE MC, and that's what I think happened with me with doxycycline. And some have reported that the MC got BETTER on antibiotics - Cipro comes ty mind.

Good luck.....I hope you can avoid surgery.

Love,

Polly

I seem to do best on Cipro. Of course, I haven't tried Zpack. Whenever I have to take an antibiotic I double up on my Culturelle. I need all the good bacteria I can get! At least, that's the theory. It works, so far.

Lots of love
