Do You Take Tylenol When You Have A Fever?

Post by Gloria »

I've been running a fever since Friday (100.3 -103) and I'm not sure if I shoud take a Tylenol to reduce it. My head is hurting and I'd like some relief. My DH says that a fever is the body's way of fighting the infection and he thinks I should let the battle continue.

Of course, I'm concerned because I'm taking the Entocort, which has already suppresed my immune system.

What are your thoughts?

Hi Gloria,

Body temperature, of course fluctuates during the day, according to a regular pattern, (lowest at 6 am, and highest at 4 pm, for most people). At your current level, whether or not to treat is sort of a tossup, (most medical authorities don't see a need to treat temps below about 101 degrees F.

I'm certainly not implying that you have bird flu, but here is an excellent guide concerning fever, and it also covers the risks of taking certain combinations of medications when treating fever:

I never hesitate to take Tylenol if I have a headache, though I have never taken anything for fever, (of course, I'm not taking a corticosteroid, either). Many members here claim that they get no significant pain relief from Tylenol, but I find that if I take it with a meal, (not on an empty stomach), and before a headache gets to severe levels, it works fine for me. I also use it for other aches and pains, (I took it twice a day for several months, last year, so that I could work, while I had plantar fasciitis ).

Thank you for your responses. My head felt like it was in a vice. I took Tylenol and am feeling a little better.

Mike might find this interesting: the past two days, while I've had a fever, I've only had 1 BM each morning and, though it's not been a perfect Norman, it's not been D either. I wonder if the fever, the extra white blood cells, or both had some effect on my MC, at least temporarily. Could have just been that I didn't feel much like eating. Might be a good poll question, though.

I'm glad you are feeling some better. I would have taken the Tylenol also. Hope you are over it soon.
