Cabbage Rolls

Post by Dee »

Cut a head of cabbage in half and cut out the top of the core
1 # ground beef
1 egg or slice and shred a carrot for the binder
1/4 cup rice (not minute)
1/2 cup chopped onion
salt/pepper
Get a pot of water boiling and drop the half head of cabbage into it
You will see that the leaves will start falling off from it
Take a pair of tongs and put the leaves that have come away from the cabbage in a strainer placed in your sink
Mix the ground beef, egg or carrot, rice, onion, salt/pepper, together
Lay out a cabbage leave and put 1/4 cup of the meat mixture in the middle and roll the leave and put it in a casserole dish seam side down
I make a tomato based sauce for mine using a 15 oz. can of tomato sauce and add 1/2 cup water, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, 1 teaspoon garlic powder & 1/2 teaspoon onion powder. Then pour the sauce all over the cabbage rolls.
If you can't have tomato sauce, take a can or bag of sauerkraut, 1 cup of water, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar and 1 teaspoon caraway seeds and mix it together and put over you cabbage rolls.
Bake covered at 350 for 1-1/2 to 2 hours...
