New to this

Post by MES »

Hi all. I am new to this and have just found this so hoping to get some insights from everyone. I have recently been diagnosed with CC after the doctor did a colonoscopy and I called to get the results. The nurse told me the results and they put me on Asacol and now I am really struggling. I thought knowing what was wrong would help after dealing with it for those few months but hsn't been a good day today and I guess I am just needing a little help on where to start and the best way to begin to figure out how to change your lifestyle and deal with this.

Hi MES,

Welcome to the board. I'm sorry to hear things are not going well, but hopefully the situation will soon improve. Of course the big trick is to find a way to control the D, and after that, maybe you won't need to make very many changes in your lifestyle.

Some of us are lucky, and the first thing we try works, but most of us have to experiment with different treatments before we're able to achieve remission. While Asacol works well for some of us, it doesn't seem to have a particularly high success rate, based on the experiences of our members here. Some of us have even had adverse reactions to it, so if it seems to be making conditions worse than they were before you started taking it, be sure to tell your doctor about it. It usually takes a bit of time before it begins to help, though.

Basically the treatment options are meds, diet, or a combination of meds and diet. Only a handful of GI docs in this country are aware that MC can be controlled by diet alone, so don't be surprised if your doctor laughs at the suggestion that diet has anything to do with your symptoms. Many of here control our symptoms by diet alone, though, so there's no question that it works for some of us. Some of the more severe cases have better results if they use the combination treatment, at least until the can get their symptoms under control.

MC cannot be cured, so be aware that if/when you stop your treatment, the symptoms will almost always return within a few days or so. Most GI docs seem to have a difficult time grasping that fact, also, and they will usually prescribe a medication for a while, with instructions to taper off of it after a few weeks, or a few months. Then they act surprised when the symptoms return.

Please feel free to ask anything, because we've all been there, and done that, and no one really understands how you feel, unless they actually have the disease. We find solutions, by sharing experiences.

Again, welcome to the group.

Tex

Hey Mes,

Welcome! You may be having a reaction to the Asacol and if your symptoms continue to get worse let your doctor know. Asacol was the first med I took after my CC DX and it instantly confounded the mess I was already dealing with. Are you having "explosive" D, almost like your body is trying to rid itself of the medication? Thats what I experienced.

Glad you found us and hang in there! This is a great group.

Welcome MES!
Sorry to hear that you are having problems.
How long have you been having problems since starting the Asacol???
Have the symptoms worsened since starting it???
In my personal experience with taking Asacol it actually provoked the D with me..
Give us a little more info and we'll try to help you out and answer your questions.

Glad you found this site and I can only say to read, research, read and research.

You may well be having a reaction to Asacol.

I take it for maintenance, but I doubt it would have ended my symptoms on it's own..... also, I think it takes quite a while to see results when it does work on it's own. Just my opinion.

I sure hope you will be able to find the treatment that works for you.... and I believe you will but it may take some perseverance.

Welcome MES

You have come to the right place for information and help, I am fairly new to the forum only a few months although I have had CC for some years now. As Tex has already said, it is a matter of controlling the 'D' once that is taken care of life can be as before this horrid problem began. I have never taken Asacol so can not offer advice on that medication my CC is under control through Entocort at the moment 3mgs every other day seems to be working well.
