Have You Had Your Appendix Removed?

Post by tex »

Hi All,

Since removal of the appendix seems to affect the likelihood of developing Crohn's disease, I'm wondering if that effect can be seen among our members.

Thanks,
Tex

Boy did I ever!!! 3 years ago my appendix ruptured and I was in ICU for almost a week....surgery was done laproscopically but I didn't recover for months. I also developed D which lasted 6 months....not sure if that ws a case of c-diff that went unrecognized or if it was indeed the start of the MC. The D finally lessened but never did go away altogether. But I had been troubled with recurrent bouts of D that followed no pattern but were devastating when they occured. So not sure if there is a connection or not. Read in the Food Doc's newsletter today about a possible connection between appendix removal and crohns and colitis....very interesting poll.....

I had an emergency appendectomy and at that time was heavily in the midst of chronic symptoms of D, major random muscle and joint pain, fatigue, insomnia, depression and all that good stuff.

Interestingly, was DX with CC about 8 months after appendectomy at age 49, 4 years ago.

Never had the appendix removed, tonsils 2 times - they grew back which means first job was not a good one and never got wisdom teeth. Pretty obvious since none pulled and now 2 plates. LOL

Note that in the general population, one in 15 people develop appendicitis during their lifetime. That means that the odds of having appendicitis is less than 7 %. Hmmmmm. We're running at about seven times that rate in this poll, so far.

My appendix was removed as part of my hysterectomy.

Mine almost ruptured (they told me). It was a couple of years before MC took up formal residence.

This is interesting,

Appendix removal delays onset of inflammatory bowel disease and lessens symptoms

Also, a good discussion here about the same subject

Still have my appendix, lost my tonsils at age 5. I still remember screaming and being strapped to the table. Ah, childhood memories.

Had my appendix removed 30 June 2010, and 15 days later my D started....and lasted 4 months until my Dx of LC.

My surgeon had me taking lots of pain meds (Rx strength Ibuprofen) and also put me on Prilosec (which I guess lowered my pH). On July 14 I went out for sushi and was sick the very next day.

I think that the prilosec lowered my stomach acid, I ate some bad sushi and probably had a nasty bacterial infection my body couldn't fight off, and this started my LC.
