Anyone Interested In Horoscopes?

Post by tex »

Hi All,

I suspect that a lot of us are interested in horoscopes, so I've been searching for a way to add that feature to this board. Since looking up horoscopes requires utilizing one's birthday information, I had to add a birthday modification to the code for this board, before I could install a way to access horoscopes. In fact, I had to add a third modification, as an intermediate step, which allows an icon representing one's zodiac sign to be displayed as a live link, beneath one's avatar.

If you want to try it out, here's how it works.

First you need to go into your profile, and enter your birthday, where it says "Date of Birth:", (just above the "Signature Block"). Entering the day and month is sufficient, and entering the year is not mandatory. If you choose to enter the year, your age will be displayed beneath your avator, in every post, and in the memberlist, (but only if you choose to allow it to be displayed - see below for details). Your age will also be displayed at the bottom of the index page, (the main page), beginning one week before your birthday, and lasting through your actual birthday date, (but this birthday information will be visible only to registered members, who are logged in. No one else will be able to see any information about your birthday, or your age.)

While you're adding this information to your profile, there is a place a few lines farther down, (where it says, "Date of Birth Public Display Options:"), where you can select what you want to be displayed, or hidden. Just click on the little arrowhead at the right end of the window, and select your choice from the drop-down menu. The choices range from "Display everything", to Display nothing", with a couple of other options in between these extremes.

The next line below that, allows you to select whether or not you want the system to send you an e-mail on your birthday. When you are finished, simply click on the "Submit" button, at the bottom of the form, to save the updated information to the database.

Once that information is in the database, anytime you view one of your posts, you will see an icon representing your zodiac sign, beneath your avatar. Simply click on that zodiac sign, and a pop-up window will open, containing your horoscope. You can also view three other horoscopes in that window, by clicking on the links for "Extended", "Today", or "Tomorrow", (at least I think that's how they're worded, if my memory is correct - I've edited so much code, in order to add this feature, that I'm just about cross-eyed, at this point. LOL).

You can also read anyone else's horoscope, (provided that they have a zodiac sign icon displayed beneath their avatar), just by clicking on their zodiac sign icon. Non-members, nor members who are not logged in, cannot see those zodiac sign icons, so obviously, they cannot read anyone's horoscope.

And last, but not least, remember that as much fun as reading some of these horoscopes can be, there are absolutely no guarantees about any information contained in them, so proceed at your own risk, if you choose to rely on any information in any of them.

I hope you enjoy using this feature, and if you have any questions, or have any problems with any of this, please don't hesitate to bring them to my attention.

 You continue to amaze me!! Am I the only one "signed up" or are there others but hidden? Everything seems to work perfectly.

Hi Shirley,

You're probably the only one signed up, so far. I think the zodiac sign should show up, even if the birthday information is hidden, so you should be able to go by that.

Love,
Tex

LOL I thought it would be a "nifty" addition to the board.

Note that you can also read horoscopes by clicking on any of the names listed in the Who is Online box, below the list of forums on the index page. However, if no zodiac sign is present, the horoscope box that pops up will be empty, (meaning that no birthday has been listed in their profile).

Love,
Tex
