Barbara - One More Thing . . .

Loss of taste and smell can also occur with hypothyroidism. If that is what is causing your problem, it would mean that your treatment is going overboard, IOW, the treatment is reducing thyroid hormone production to much. Either way, your loss of taste and smell is probably due to the propylthiouracil you're taking to treat hyperthyroidism.

Incidentally, did your doctor mention that your excessive thyroid hormone production may be due to those nodules? Nodules can produce thyroid hormone, and since they are not regulated by the system that regulates the normal thyroid hormone production that takes place within the thyroid gland, they tend to produce it whether your body needs it or not.

Your doctor's suggestion to stop the treatment might have some merit, or maybe the dosage needs to be reduced.

Good Morning Mrs. Columbo,

Well, of course, the reason why you are having trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep, is because of your thyroid. At this point it's not obvious whether your thyroid is overactive or underactive, (because both conditions can cause sleep problems), but it is definitely not performing correctly.

Maybe your GP will have some insight into the situation, it certainly couldn't hurt to ask. Good luck with getting the problem resolved. Thyroid issues can be very tricky, because no two people are alike, when it comes to their thyroid situation.
