Discussed Diet with GI Today
During a follow-up appointment with my GI, he asked me if I've gained any weight while being on Entocort. I told him that I've actually lost 8 lbs., due to being on a restricted diet because of this disease. I told him that he probably wouldn't agree with that course, but I felt that I needed to see if any foods were causing my problems.
To my surprise, he was genuinely interested. I told him about Dr. Fine's stool tests which showed I had antibodies to gluten, soy, eggs, yeast and dairy. I mentioned that Dr. Fine was the GI who recommended the Pepto Bismol regimen. I didn't tell him that he no longer recommends it. One thing at a time... I said that I am going on faith with the gluten, yeast and dairy, but I know for sure that soy and eggs are a problem.
Unlike his nurse, he didn't chide me for thinking that gluten could be a problem. Instead, he asked me if I knew that rye and barley contain gluten. Then he told me to read labels very carefully. I told him I did.
I told him I am considering going on the Elimination Diet. He nodded his head. He actually said that he was impressed with me because I was taking an active role in observing and noting my reactions.
I'm only his second patient with MC. He openly admits that he and the medical profession do not have all the answers for this disease. It's too bad that I'm such a hard case. I think he would be very receptive to the gluten-free idea, but my situation is so much more complicated. I've eliminated so many foods, but I'm still not any further along than I was after I began Entocort nearly a year ago. Nonetheless, I'm happy that Entocort is keeping major flares at bay.
I guess I underestimated my GI. He actually supports me in trying to achieve remission through diet and he's hoping I will someday. He didn't really help me, but I think remission lies within our hands, not the doctor's. He and I agreed that Entocort is there to treat the symptoms, but not the disease.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
Gloria,
Wow! Step to the head of the class. There's no telling how many future patients you may have helped by "retraining" your doctor. Now that you've opened the door to a new way of thinking for him, I'll bet he'll do some more investigating on his own.
Thanks for a great post. It's a great feeling when you discover that your doctor can be open minded, isn't it.

P S If you ever decide to pursue a second career, you might give some serious thought to sales - you're apparently pretty good at it, if you can sell the GF diet to a GI doc.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Morning All,
Gloria you landed a great GI. I also have a GI that thoroughly encourages me to do what I feel is needed for my condition. Also feels that if the GF diet is working for me not to fix something that is not broken. He is encouraging but openly admits that as a GI for over 20 years now he knows very little about this disease and admires me for stepping up to the plate and taking the lead. There are a few good ones out there.
Love, Maggie

After all the very helpful posts here, I think I am going to do it. Thanks to the person who posted about Dr. Fine being mentioned in the Prevalence Study in the Archive of Internal Med. Feb. 2003.
