Mr. Wynn from Speedy-Q Just Called
Just received a phone call from Mr. Wynn.
He gave me an apology and said how sorry he was about what had happened to me. I also said he spoke with the employee's who were on duty that day and their excuse for inforcing the "No Exception Policy" is because since Nick's Market closed (which was the only grocery store in Reese) they have constantly been flooded with people constantly requesting to use the restroom. They also said that they don't remember me because of all the bathroom request they get daily.
Mr. Wynn did tell me that because of boundry lines and building codes by the State of Michigan that he would have to put in 2 bathrooms for each sex with both being handicap accessable. It is for this reason when he added all the new pumps and awnings he chose not to include putting in restrooms.
His solution to the public restroom situation is that he has ordered a couple Port-A-Potty's to be placed out back of the store. I shudder to think what is going to happen when those Port-A-Potty's are place out back. #1. They won't be kept up. #2. The teenagers are going to turn them into their own personal art easel with graphic art work. #3. I give maybe 1 or 2 weeks before the Port-A-Potty's are tipped over.
I appreciate all the hard work Joan and Tex have done because of what happened at Speedy-Q in Reese. Joan has done so much research and her last post in regards to a new Bill in Michigan in regards to Access to Restrooms is amazing.
I have decided to contact: Mary Drier who is a writer for the Tuscola County Advertiser giving her the site that Joan found and asking her to possibly consider doing an article in regards to the Michigan Bill and without slandering or pointing fingers to just one business, address the article towards all businesses who may or may not be aware of individuals who have disabilities that may not be noticable from the outside may need from time to time access to a restroom.
Would like any and all idea's pro or con in relationship to my idea.
Love and God Bless:

I appreciate everything you're saying but I didn't expect a gift certificate to even be offered. I'm just going to have to be more cautious when I have to leave home. Make sure I'm wearing protection and I have found if I take anti-diarrhea medication a half hour or so before I go anywhere that it helps. I've also realized if I have a BM before I go anywhere and arrange my appointments for afternoon that my emergency situations are not as often or urgent. There is just so many things to adapt to and I'm doing my best to protect myself. I will say this; I still have NO INTENTIONS of doing any future business with Speedy-Q of Reese. Mr. Wynn was nice enough and even though our conversation ended with me in tears trying to explain how devastating this illness is I didn't hear nor did a feel Mr. Wynn truly understood or cared. It's hard informing people about this disease when they let their minds go "blank" when they hear words such as "I messed myself", "was unable to make it to a bathroom in time"........................Some look at you as if your crazy.

Jodi,
Well, that wasn't a super resolution, but it wasn't bad, either. At least you did get some action, and some changes at Speedy-Q in Reese. And, a personal apology is certainly worth something - to me, it would be worth a lot more than a gift certificate.
Being in business myself, (and serving on a district board affiliated with both state and federal governments), I can appreciate Mr. Wynn's position. You can't just build a nice "restroom" anymore. The government is going to tell you exactly how it must be built, and since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, (ADA), complying with those standards can be prohibitively expensive, unless you have very deep pockets, loaded with cash.
The district board that I serve on, for example, had to spend a ridiculous amount of money, recently, to bring a few minor features of our restroom up to code standards, even though, to the best of our knowledge, it was working quite well, and no one had ever complained. When an inspector says changes are needed, however, there are no other options - the changes have to be made. We had a drinking fountain, for example, (this was in a hallway, not the bathroom), that the inspector said was several inches too high for wheelchair access. Our solution - take it out. You don't have to provide one, but if you do, it has to meet the ADA code. Since replacing it would have required some significant changes in the plumbing, we couldn't justify the cost, so we just eliminated it, so now no one can get a drink there.
Do you see my point. The laws make compliance so expensive, and so much trouble, that it's easier to "quit than fight", (remember the old Benson and Hedges commercials? - "I'd rather fight than quit"). If you've never had bureaucrats telling you how to run your business, you may not appreciate what I'm saying here. Trust me, one of the job prerequisites for government inspectors is to have the personality of a dictator. There are probably a few who do not have such a personality trait, but they are probably the laughingstock of their peers.
Anyway, my position is, if the government wants to dictate exactly how restrooms should be built, then they should build them, especially in areas where business volume does not provide a level of income that allows private businesses to justify the expense involved in constructing and maintaining a facility according to the code. I notice, for example, that the State of Texas is currently spending millions of dollars per facility, to install new "super rest areas" on interstate 35, a few miles from where I live, (and presumably a few other locations). These are long overdue, of course, but the first thing that I think of, every time I drive past them, is that there is no way that small businesses could justify that kind of expense in the current economy. To the State, though, it's no big deal.
Love,
Tex

This is a good point. The question, of course, is who should provide those facilities - the individuals who use them, businesses, cities, counties, states, or the feds. There is a reason why many businesses do not have public restrooms these days - they can't afford them.Joan wrote:Call me crazy, but I think everyone who has the need to use a restroom should have access.

When Mr. Wynn called this a.m. I accepted his apology infact our whole conversation was very civil. I listened to his explination and I totally understand about his issues with building codes, boundries and Gov. Regulations. I truly appreciated his contacting me and his apology.
I however, have made some choices of my own with the help of many post that I have read and the awesome research that Joan has done and provided for all of us. I contacted the CCFA and asked them for a bathroom access card which they will be mailing to me. I have also made the choice to no longer do any business with Speedy-Q in Reese. This decission was made when I was denied access to use there restroom.
It was Mr. Wynn's decission to place Port-A-Potty's behind his business. I did not ask him to do this and it's my personal oppinion that this idea may turn out very badly. I grew up my entire life in a small "Poke'n Plum" town called Gilford. (This is when by the time you poke your head out the car window, your plum through it!) Went to grade school and graduated from Reese. I don't live there now but I still have family and friends who live there. I know personally the size of the town as well as the lack of common sense used by many of the teenagers and young adults. Their judgement is lacking in many area's just like in towns all across America. My personal belief is that within 1-2 weeks Mr. Wynn is going to find his Port-A-Potty trashed, tipped over and one heck of a smelly mess to clean up. In other words;TSWHTF!!!!!!!!
With everyone's help and support here, I'm making changes for myself so that I'm not caught in that position with out options. I don't want anyone feeling sorry for me. I do however, want them to treat me with respect. God only knows that the disease we have takes enough of our dignity on it's own without having added problems. I didn't know that CCFA gave out bathroom access cards. Now I do and I'm going to receive one.
Each and every day we all make choices. Some choices turn out badly and others turn out great. No matter what choice each of us make the fact still remains, we learn and grow more knowledge with each and every single choice we make.

Jodi,
The thing about the Port-a-Potties is that they are leased, and the leasing company services them, and is responsible for them. Speedy-Q will only be responsible for the monthly lease fee.
I don't recall ever seeing an ADA-compliant Port-a-Potty. I would assume that since they are considered "temporary" and portable facilities, they are almost surely exempt from the law.

I still don't think having a Port-A-Potty behind Speedy-Q is going to be worth the hassle. I hope I'm wrong and Mr. Wynn's gracious solution works but I think as long as I'm in the process of receiving a bathroom card from CCFA that my job now is to help educate others about Colitis Related Diseases and Issues and to continue supporting and carring about our family of PP.
If I start passing what information I've gained to my FP and GI letting them know about bathroom cards through CCFA or asking them to design one themselves for their patients. As well as do my part in getting Bathroom Legislation passed like; Texas, Illinois and Minnesota have passed then slowly but surely some of the asinine comments and remarks will become educated comments.
Maybe my thinking is wrong, but I value my new found family and each of us have to be realistic and I'm trying very hard to do that. My situation with Speedy-Q of Reese is in my past. It happened and I can't change the out come nor the humiliation I indured. I only have today and tomorrow isn't here yet. Today I've requested a bathroom card from CCFA and I accepted Mr. Wynn's apology. I also e-mailed my support to Rep. Andy Meisner, D-Ferndale on getting Legislation to pass Bill 5046.
I truly care about other people and the family I've met on this site. I want to move forward and continue learning how to get myself into remission and do my darndest to stay away from falling to deep into depression. I've grown stronger emotionally in the past 5 days and I don't want to go back anymore, I want to go forward. It may only be one step at a time but as Rhett Butler said to Scarlett only I'm changing a few words;"Speedy-Q my darling, I don't give a damn if someone trashes or tips over your Port-A-Potty's."

Q
Jodi,
I think you misinterpreted what I'm saying. I apologize for not doing a better job of making my point. What I'm saying is that the Port-a-Potties were selected specifically to eliminate any hassle for Speedy-Q. With that simple addition, Speed-Q now has "public restroom facilities" in Reese, and yet there is absolutely no hassle for the employees or management of Speedy-Q.
IOW, now, no one can complain that Speedy-Q in Reese does not have public restroom facilities, and no one can legitimately ask to use their employee restroom, (because they have the Port-a-Potties available for public use). No one at Speedy-Q is responsible for cleaning and maintaining them, (because they are leased, so that is the responsibility of the leasing company). Furthermore, no one at Speedy-Q has to worry about the units being defaced or overturned, because they are the property of the leasing company).
Sure, they will probably soon smell like a cesspool, and have all sorts of undesirable "art additions", and sure, they will sooner or later be overturned, or stolen, or whatever, but so what? It's no hide off Speedy-Q's butt, because they are leased, and the lease is cheap, so why should they care.
The point is, it's a cheap and easy way for them to prove to you, (and anyone else who is interested), that they're not justified in providing restroom facilities for the public. Proof of that will be exactly what you described - the units will be "trashed" in a few weeks, which conveniently proves their point.
Now do you see what I'm trying to say?
Love,
Tex

Hi Tex:
I absolutely loved how you worded your last reply! ROLMAO!!!!!! Both of us are on the same page and I knew in my heart as well as my head that Mr. Wynn's solution by leasing Porta-Potties was to cover his own butt and to protect himself as well as his employee's from having to deal with any one needing to use Speedy-Q's "non-public" restroom.
Let him lease the the Porta-Potties, let the kids trash and tip them over because I know that when this happens and the stench and the Porta-Potties become unacceptable to residence of Reese, as well as the Chamber of Commerce decides to react that Mr. Wynn's not going to be a very happy camper.
As I mentioned before, we all make choices and Mr. Wynn made his choice which is not going to affect me in the least because I'm not going to be doing any business with Speedy-Q in the future anyway. Sooooo, when the then Mr. Wynn and town of Reese can decide what to do about the stench and eye sore that Mr. Wynn created.
Actually, I'm finding his solution quite hilarious for the fact that he's doing all this because I was refused access to use his restroom facilities and in doing so I messed myself. When this happened I was very humiliated but right now I truly feel the humiliation I felt is nothing compared to the confrontation he's going to be facing head on with the residents and Chamber of Commerce of Reese.
It's true he's only leasing and it's up to the company to keep up the care of the units but if it becomes a cesspool of s _ _ t and stench I know for a fact that the Mayor of Reese; Mr. Hembling is not going to be happy.
I'll be sure to keep any and all newspaper articles once they start hitting the stores and let you know just how fast the Porta-Potties are removed.
Oh, Thank You soooooo much. I received my PP T-shirts today and I love'm very much.
Please don't feel that I'm hurt or upset with anything you've stated because I'm not. I totally understand and I appreciate how when you try and help someone you give truthful responces for both sides of an issue. By doing this you give a person a full picture of facts as well as reasons why things are doing differently by two side.
Things are going to be just as God plans and what will happen will happen with or with out me messing myself. The only thing you can be certain it WON'T be me messing myself again because of the policies of Speedy-Q.

Goodmorning Tex!
Hope you know just how much I appreciate everything you, Joan and the others have done for me.
I have to admit I really appreciated your second reply and your explination because it made things a "whole" lot easier to understand why Mr. Wynn would do something like lease Porta-Potties. It's pretty clear now that in all actuality he's "back paddling" to make himself look good.
We will just have to wait and see what happens once the Mayor, Village Council and Chamber of Commerce along with the residents of Reese feel when they are in place.
Personally I think he's going to need all the Angel's God can spare to watchover, protect and guide him. LOL
