Florida shark attack
Oh, my God, we have listened to a very sad news today when they informed of a 14 year old girl who died in a shark attack at the Florida beaches...
We have no sharks here in the South of Spain but I feel so sorry for her and her family.
Is that usual in Florida? I saw it on Tv... So many sharks around...
I thought it could be because the sea water is warmer than usual. But it is so sad...
If you live there, please, take care and avoid swimming for a while...
Love,
Tessa.

FLORIDA SHARKS
Florida is very noted for having shark infested waters---due to these waters being connected to larger oceans and the Carib. Sea---
Lou used to dive and he and a group of guys swam amidst the sharks--
They were with a guide and it was the sharks feeding time and thats what these guys did---fed the sharks!!!!!
So they werent hungry for them---
I thought they were crazy but as Lou says it is simply a most beautiful world there--
I feel as U do Tessa---so very sorry for the kids and specially their families---
Supposedly, there is a barrier warning as how far NOT to go out but when they swim in it doesnt matter--
This shark was filmed only 30 feet from the shoreline---
Say a little prayer for their souls
luv Barbara

Also, it's important to note these attacks are by Bull Sharks - the only sharks known to purposefully attack a human. The only other reason a shark would attack (all other sharks) is a mistake; Great Whites, for example, mistake surfers for seals and attack. Unfortunately, they attack by going deep down into the dark murky depths and charging upward at their prey, so they really don't get to see what they're charging... but it's good that they only attack in the deep. Bull sharks are very aggressive, and can survive in fresh water as well as marine water. They've been found swimming up the Mississippi as far north as St. Louis!!!! That's halfway up to Canada!!! Anyway, they are the only sharks who will purposefully bite a human, and have been known to bite more than once. I guess it's important to understand the habits and characteristics of the sharks you're among when you're in the water. Bull sharks can go VERY shallow, in 3 feet of water even, so it's very important to keep your kids under your watchful eye and NOT let them sit for hours in the ocean. Unfortunately, shark attacks are increasing in FL, as well as the population of sharks. I don't know if any of you had seen the footage of shark migration they had a few months ago, but you could see literally THOUSANDS of sharks swarming around that area. With all of those sharks, I would think food supplies would be scarce, increasing your risk of being attacked.

Wow Christine, that has been a very welcome information source...
Is the sea warmer than usual? Isn´t it strange, such a huge number of sharks around?
Bull sharks are definitely very dangerous...

Tessa.

lol I wish I knew how warm the ocean temps were.. I'm in Minnesota, a landlocked state. I just watch the discovery channel often, and my hubby and I are into marine fish and biology. We like to watch oceanographic documentaries for fun :) We also have a couple of huge reef tanks full of life :)
I don't think the oceans are any warmer than usual. The photographs of large numbers were during their migrational season, not sure where they end up tho. Possibly Hawaii.. This was a couple of months ago, I believe, but the shark attacks in FL have been pretty steady sofar, as well as in Hawaii.
I guess the concern would be that if Bull Sharks attack for reasons other than mistake, like hunger, they might grow to like the taste of human meat, and seek them out more. That would be a catastrophy, considering they can come in 3 feet of water.
I definitely wouldn't let my children play in the water in FL.. but that's just me..
