Fairly New Here

Post by kitkin »

Hi Everyone,
I've been a lurker for quiet some time now. This site has been so informative.
I was diagnosed with Microscopic Colitis over 10 years ago. I've been to 5 different Dr's. Each one telling me to eat more fiber except this last one I just went to also did the pepto bismal which I had no luck. Today I just had another colonoscopy done. Which he says he found nothing but did several biopsy’s. He also did some blood work & stool samples and I’ve received a letter saying they found something abnormal. I don’t know what that is yet. He told me today he would discuss that with me when I go to my next appointment which in the 10th of July. But he also gave me a prescription for Welchor today and told me to try it for a couple of weeks to see what happens. Has anyone here tried that? And did it help at all? I’m hoping for at least some relief. I’m tired of running to the bathroom.

Thanks for all your help.

Welcome (Why did my colorful welcome disappear?)Sally. We're glad you posted.

Welchol? That's what I'm taking and it has helped.

We'll keep our fingers crossed. It sounds like you have found a better doc but I'm a newbie so I really don't know much.

Come chat this evening.

Have you gone to the EnteroLab site?

I lived on Pepto even before dx!

Hi Sally,

Welcome aboard. I haven't had any experience with Welchol, but it sounds as though you've struck out five times in a row, with picking doctors, if they all told you to eat more fiber. That's exactly the wrong thing to do with MC. Many doctors think that MC and IBS are very similar, (or even the same disease), so they recommend the same treatment. They're wrong, of course.

It will be interesting to learn what your doctor is going to tell you about what they have found.

Many doctors prescribe cholesterol-lowering drugs to treat MC, because most of those drugs have the side effect of causing constipation, due to the fact that most of them work by sequestering bile. If you are having ordinary, osmotic diarrhea, then it might help. If you're having secretory diarrhea, however, I doubt that it will provide any significant benefit, as far as the D is concerned.

Again, welcome - it's good to see you posting. Please keep us informed of your progress, because feedback is the best way that we have available to learn what works, and what doesn't.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hello,
Yes, I will keep you informed. My next appointment is the 10th. It will be interesting to find out the the test results are. Thanks for your support here.
After going to the first Dr. he had me try the pepto bismal 8 pills a day for two weeks. Well that didn't work. But it did seem to slow it down. So for several years I would take 2 - 4 a day to try to help get me threw the day while I was working. 3 years ago we moved to KY because my husband had cancer and needed to get into the University of KY and I stopped taking pepto bismal. As I finally realized they weren't helping. All of the other Dr.s in between said "You need more fiber". So when I went to this Dr. one of the first things I told him please don't tell me to eat more fiber unless you want me sitting in the bathroom all day. Anyway, sorry for rambling on. It's just a relief to finally talk to someone who really understands what I'm going threw.
