Carrie,

If you run out of options with VISTA/IE, you might try Firefox, just in case the hangup is due to something in IE. It's all I use these days, except, of course, for certain programs that require IE in order to update.

Hugs,
Tex

Thanks Sweetheart,

I try not to run Firefox on my system, since it likes to fight with Frontpage when I'm working on the websites, but we run it on Rick's computer, so I may have to just use his to chat with, now that evil Vista is in our lives....geez I hate Microsoft, but since all 3 sites I run use Frontpage extensions...they are the game we have to play....

Hugs,
C

PS: I think we have Vista leashed up and behaving, the problem is still evil IE 7, IE 6 wasn't a problem, but we lost it with the lightning strike...major bummer

Hi Carrie,

I hear you - I originally set up my website using Front Page, and now, since I added a MySQL database, and added the php files necessary to run this board, to the root web, every time I access my root web with Front Page, beaucoups of files from the original Front Page installation, are automatically duplicated, and added to the php files, so that I have to go back through them later, with an FTP program, to delete the duplicates. Obviously, the problem, lies with Front Page, in my case, since it doesn't happen unless I use Front Page. I've taken down most of my original website, but it still does it. If I weren't so lazy, I'd go back and start over, and just use ordinary, everyday HTML code, using a good HTML editor, and an FTP client, (both of which are available free of charge), rather than Front Page. I don't even have Front Page on this particular computer, since I almost never use it, anymore. Front Page is a handy program, but like most MS programs, it's written to discourage you from using anyone else's programs, a company policy that I find to be harder and harder to stomach, as I get to be more experienced, ( IOW, as I get older). LOL.

It's still possible to download IE6 from microsoft, and I think that it will work OK with VISTA, but if you try this, I suggest you image your system first, using a good third party imaging program. To be honest, I have never had any success at all, trying to restore a computer by using the built in MS restore function. I've tried it with both XP pro, and VISTA, and it simply never resolves any serious corruption in the OS files. It might work for application restorations, but they are never the problem - the problem almost always is due to corruption in some of the OS files. <sigh> On the other hand, the "Repair" option, on the XP installation disk, does indeed work correctly to resolve certain problems, but most computers these days don't even come with a disk, so the consumer gets cheated out of that option, unless a disk is purchased separately.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6 ... fault.mspx

When I built my last computer, I spent $269 for a package with both the 64-bit, and 32-bit versions of VISTA. First I tried the 64-bit version, but I couldn't even find an anti-virus program that would work with it, (at the time, over a year ago), then I tried to add a program that it didn't like, and the OS scrambled itself, so I repartitioned the drive and started over, this time with the 32-bit version. Things went better, even though drivers weren't available for some of the hardware I use, but then one more time, when I tried to add an application that it didn't like, VISTA scrambled itself, (and wouldn't restore, of course), so in disgust, I bought another copy of XP Pro, repartitioned the hard drive again, installed the XP Pro, and I haven't had a problem since. I may try VISTA again, in a year or two, if they ever come out with a service pack to fix all the problems, but I suspect that by then, they will have a better operating system on the market. I'm not gonna waste my money on it, though, until it's been out long enough to get some decent reviews - I'm tired of paying Bill Gates ridiculous prices for Beta releases of Operating Systems. LOL.

Good luck. I hope you can figure out a way to make things work right.

Hugs,
Tex

Thanks for the ideas Sweetheart,

I hear you about giving evil Microsoft anymore money....if I hadn't built all 3 websites using Frontpage because we didn't have Dreamweaver Suite ( couldn't afford it), I would rebuild everything from the ground up and start over again, but considering just one of our sites has over 26 pages and 160 jpgs....putting in all those tables would send into an early retirement from the DJD flare from that much computer work :???:

Still not having any luck getting IE 7 to not lock me out of the chat, I may try getting IE 6 back on my system and see if Vista will cooperate with it. Since doing the chat on Rick's system is an option, at least I can just do that....but his computer doesn't have the 23 inch monitor....

One way or another....I will be back......you all are stuck with me....

Last year Vista was the only operating system I could get for PCs I ordered. As soon as they arrived, we uninstalled it and put XP on. This year I was able to order the PCs from Dell with XP installed and the license to install Vista later if we chose. Since I retired today, someone else can make the decision when the time comes.

Carrie,

Okay, I just tried IE7, (on a machine running XP), and it went straight to the chat room without so much as a whimper.

You may have already checked this out, but just in case - from your IE7 menu bar, select "Tools", then "Internet Options", and under the "Advanced" tab, scroll down to the "Java" section, and make sure that the box under it is checked, (where it says "Use JRE 1.6.0_06 for <applet> (requires restart"). If that's okay, then it's probably not IE7, it's VISTA.

Whatta ya mean, stuck with you? We've been missin' the heck out of you ever since the lightning storm that did all the damage. It ain't the same without you.

Hugs,
Tex

Gloria,

Thanks, I thought that maybe I was the only one foolish enough to spend money on VISTA, and then uninstall it. Thanks for legitimatizing it. LOL.

Congratulations! Now you'll have the time to do all those things you've been putting off for years, (theoretically, at least).

What my husband does in his retirement besides work part time is play golf and go to lunch. One of his lunch groups was called "Town and Gown" but now it's called "The Confederacy of Lunches!" Weird.

Oh, I forgot about his meetings...........

One of DH's former colleagues at the university is going home to Nigeria to American U. We asked him if he would get all our money! I wasn't sure how he'd take it but he smiled.

He said he'd have a US phone number over there.

I just tried to get the chat to load on Rick's system using Vista and IE 7 and it came right up...so some setting is off on my system still, looks like we will be bird dogging it to figure out which is the issue....

Don't worry Sweetheart, I have missed you all too........been pretty boring around here, just running the business and trying to recover from Mother Nature's hissy fit, but we are slowly and surely getting back to normal.....then I will be back with a vengenence....

Carrie,

Sometimes, when a program, or a device, refuses to work correctly, as a last resort, I uninstall it and reinstall it, and that usually resolves the problem. Some of these programs are getting to be so ponderous, these days, that finding a glitch can be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Joan,

Now that was a cruel joke.

Several years ago, when I had my website set up so that it described food grade corn as one of the products that we had available, every few months or so, I'd get an order for a shipload of corn. Even though corn was pretty cheap back then, a shipload amounted to millions of dollars worth, of course. The delivery destination varied, (always some obscure port that I had never heard of), in some third-world country, but the payment was almost always to be by cashier's check, through a "government official" in - (you guessed it) - Nigeria.  We never loaded any ships, of course, but we always got a good laugh out of it.

Thanks for the idea Sweetheart, we may have to try that.......Murphy's law is in full effect, Rick doesn't need it to work on his computer, so of course, his works....

The Nigeria scams made me chuckle, I have ad's running for the Irish Dexter cattle on the net, and we get Nigeria scam emails weekly from them......some of them are downright comical....
