NEVERMIND

Post by JLH »

Sorry I should have searched first. I found this on their web site.

"What Grains are Allowed?
At first the impression is that there is little left to eat. A common question is "what do I have for breakfast?". Luckily there are many gluten free grains and seeds and they are becoming more common in manufactured foods. The gluten free grains and seeds are: quinoa, rice, corn, amaranth, buckwheat, flaxseeds, and millet. There are many other ingredients used in gluten free products such as potato, arrowroot, sago, sorghum, tapioca and teff."

Correct. It's a shame that the name is so misleading, because buckwheat is not a member of the wheat family, in fact, it's not even a member of the grass family.

I find it rather interesting that normally, all malted products are based on malt derived from barley, which means that all products containing malt, also contain gluten. Even many/most so-called "gluten-free" beers contain malted grain for which the malting process is started with barley, meaning that they are really "low-gluten", rather than gluten-free. Buckwheat is rather unique, in that the seeds can also be used for malting, similar to barley, so that they can be used to make gluten-free malt, and therefore, gluten-free beer.

Interesting, I can live for a lifetime w/o beer. It's all the rest about which I am worried.

I happily made it through the long weekend at the sailing club. YEA!

I took the GF Buckwheat Waffles and some kind of frozen rice bread to the sailing club. The bread was like a brick even after it defrosted.

I ate my own meal of steak, potato and applesauce instead of the hamburger, hot dogs and buns etc. provide by the club.

 Good going! Anytime you can survive an outing such as that without getting sick, you're doing something right. The trick, of course, is to do what you did - take your own food.

It's typical for most commercial GF breads to be easily mistaken for a brick.  Kinnikinnick makes some GF products that are probably the least "brick-like" among the commonly available ready-made baked products, but, of course, they're not in the same league as Anna's bread - Anna doesn't sell any "brick mixes". LOL.

I'll being going into town to a health food store tomorrow. Years ago, we sat with a woman and her daughter at a dinner for donors at DH's former university. Daughter owns a health food store and seemed very knowledgeable.

I have not checked our only other grocery, Wal-Mart, yet but I don't imagine that they'll have much GF but I hope I'm wrong.

DH's paperwork came from my GI but I think he will cancel and go to the DO.

Last evening, a friend was saying that his son's tests for med school weren't great and he may apply to DO school..........

Outside of raw, unprocessed foods, of course, I believe that the only GF foods they sell are "accidental". IOW, they don't stock them because they're GF. Rice Chex, popcorn, tapioca, etc., fall into that category.

Hmmmmm. That's not particularly encouraging news, is it. LOL.

Interesting and about what I expected re Wal-Mart. I told one of the store managers of our other 2 stores how General Mills changed the ingredients so Rice Chex was now GF. (I feel like sending General Foods a thank you note!)

Yes, wasn't too happy to hear that about our friend's son.

I may start FAXing my doc's office so I don't have to talk to them and have a record of when questions got asked.

I didn't have enough Welchol to get me through staying at the lake. I called early and often (talking to staff) and it was partially my fault for not remembering to ask when I was on the phone with GI. I was "all shook up" from our "fun" conversation, that I was ready to cry and scream.

The pharmacist assistant FAXed in Thurs. morning but hadn't heard from doc's office. I called back to find they hadn't gotten any thing. In the afternoon, the pharmacist herself, told me she called and stayed on the phone until she got the order! (Doc had only given me a 10 supply, I suppose to see if it would work. Now I get 180 pills instead of 60 for the same $30.00!

Sounds like you've got a good pharmacist. Good for her.

It's CVS which I would have quit when a different pharmacist gave me my thyroid prescription for 50 mc(?) over what it was supposed to be!!!!!!!!!!

I'd much rather use a local smaller pharmacy but their hours are lousy.
