Don't Forget Who I AM!!!

Post by starfire »

 Seems like a month since I've been on but I know it hasn't been quite that long.........
Been terribly busy and TIRED. Working on the bathroom now in between other stuff.
The time is FLYING up here.............

We have been visited by a Mama Black Bear & 2 little cubs twice. Mama Bear has returned several times to empty the bird feeders during the night. Then last evening a different bear showed up (pretty sure it was of the male persuasion). He was NOT very cautious and not careful with the feeders like Mama Bear was. She just licks all the seeds out. Doesn't even pull them down and never breaks them.

Bill let him have the seeds in the metal one even though he pulled it down (this one is pretty hard to destroy), but when he was finished he went out on the porch and told the bear it was time to leave. He did but not very far. HaHa Bill rescued the other two feeders and shortly afterward the bear returned looking for spilled seeds on the ground. He just had a totally different attitued, etc. from Mama Bear. I don't know if Black Bear share territory or not but I hope he hasn't run her off.

Missed you guys. I hope to get back on a regular schedule one of these days.

Love, Shirley

Hi Shirley,

You certainly have been "scarce" around here this summer. You've been doing a heck of a lot of remodeling work lately. If we ever need any tutoring on remodeling, we'll know who to call.

Sorry to hear you've got a bad-mannered bear hanging around. Some bears just don't know how to get along with people. LOL. I'm not sure about the territorial issue - never had any dealings with bears.

I hope it won't be long before you can log in more often.

Love,
Tex

Did you watch the program that was on just this last week where a guy had a cabin in a remote part of Alaska and he would feed the bear out of his hands. Also, would lay down and sleep with them. He said his wife and daughter wouldn't visit him to often because of all the bears. (Which I wouldn't blame them) Oh, and there was one that would even come into his cabin. I don't think that is something I would ever want to do.

I remember another show about a guy in Alaska who lived with the bears. He was a bit eccentric and didn't hang out around people much but eventually found a girlfriend who would go out with him to find bears. Eventually he and his girlfriend were killed by a bear, it was very sad but what do expect chasing down wild bears and trying to interact with them? I would love to see a wild bear from a safe distance! The closest I've come is backpacking on the Appalachian Trail and seeing bear prints in the snow. I always carry a gun though just in case...not so much for the animals but for people. More than one woman has been killed on the trail by a man.

I agree with you 100 %. Wild animals, (especially the big bears), are not cute, fuzzy, pets. Just because we think they are cute, doesn't mean that they view us the same way. Those who disagree, almost always end up discovering the hard way, that they made a grave mistake.

I also agree with you on the "security" precautions. There are few things sadder than a helpless victim, who could have avoided being a victim, if she or he had taken a few precautions to provide for their own safety. The chances are, you'll never need to use it, but in the meantime, it can provide a feeling of security that nothing else can, and if the situation ever arises that you actually do need it, it will be truly priceless.

 Thanks Everyone!! I've missed being here too.

Sara, I saw that documentary also and I thought the guy and his girlfriend were totally nuts!! Those were grizzly bears they were fooling with. Not that I want to get personal with a black bear either. I enjoy seeing them, especially the little ones, but that big male........ well, I wouldn't want to meet up with him in the dark for sure. I enjoy all wildlife (well, maybe not entirely all - haha) but I respect the fact that they can be dangerous also. If the bear are increasing on the A. Trail the way they are around here you just might bump into one sometime. Should be black bear though and they will NORMALLY run from you.

Tex....... I had to laugh about the bad mannered bear. That female one is truly the exception because she is the first one I've ever heard of that doesn't destroy, tear down or run off with bird feeders. She just licks them clean (and it takes her a LONG time to like the seeds out of those small holes) and leaves them for Bill to refill. She's no dummy!!!

All of them seem to have moved on for now but perhaps she'll be back.

Love,
Shirley
