The movie, Giant -- waaay off topic!

Post by Lucy »

Perhaps Wayne will know the answer to this one.

Thursday was the 50th anniversary of the movie, Giant, so there was a big celebration way out in Marfa, Tx. where it was filmed.

If you'll recall, this was James Dean's last flick, and of course, Liz Taylor was in it, and Rock also, I think.

Perhaps I'm mixing something up, but wasn't this film based on the striking of oil at Spindle Top?

If I'm not mistaken, Spindle Top was in Beaumont, not too far from Lousiana, so if that's so, how come they did the movie in Marfa which is dessert wilderness in the part of southwest Texas that protrudes into Mexico?

Can you imagine filming Steel Magnolias in Arizona? Hahaha!

Let me know if I've got my movies mixed up. Wouldn't be my category on Jeopardy, that's for sure!

Just some trivia for ya.

Hi Luce,

Yes, you are correct. Your memories about the movie seem to be right on the money. The oil well in the movie was inspired by the "Spindletop" well, also known as the "Lucas Gusher". The Spindletop field is indeed located near Beaumont, and the movie was filmed at Marfa.

The movie was actually based on Edna Ferbers novel, thus the reason for the West Texas setting. (There aren't any half-a-million acre ranches near Beaumont). IOW, the movie was based on the story of a West Texas rancher and his family, rather than on the story of Captain Lucas and the Spindletop Well.

And, yes, James Dean immortalized his life style, (and, to some extent, the movie), when he died in a car crash before the movie was finished.

I've always liked that movie.

Me too! They don't make movies like that anymore. James Dean would have had an amazing career, if he had lived. I thought he was driving too fast around a corner and crashed that way. The movie about his life portrays it with him being hit by another car, while making a left turn. With the accident not being his fault. I think I'm right anyway. My memory is bad lately.

Such a tragedy anyway!

Your memory is pretty good. I wasn't sure about that fatal crash, so I looked it up. Actually, the other car was attempting a left turn, but they crashed head-on. Here's a story about the Porshe he was driving, (incuding a description of the fatal crash). His car appears to have brought bad luck everywhere it went, for almost everyone who got near it.

Thanks Wayne,

I knew I had something a little wrong. Now, I remember how it was. Thanks also for the website...I've always been fastenated by James Dean. Very sad that he died so young...like so many talented people.

That is scary about his car. Very strange.

Strange how some things are unexplainable!
"Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful." -- Buddha
