Anyone Interested In A Chat This Evening? :conversation:

Post by tex »

Hi all,

Is there any interest in a chat this evening, say at at 8 pm Eastern time, 7 pm Central, 5 pm Pacific time? I believe this would be at 10 am in Brisbane, Australia, on Tuesday morning, in case anyone there has time to join in.

See you there, if you can make it.

If you can give me directions on how to do a chat, I would love to join! I'm far from a computer wiz.

Babsey,

Just click on the "Chat" link at the upper part if the page, and familiarize yourself with the "chat room" ahead of time. You have to have Java activated in your browser, but if most of the emoticons used in posts are animated for you, then Java is already turned on. If the chat room doesn't load for you, you may need to download an updated version of Java, for it to work properly. Your browser should advise you if that's the case. It can take a while to load the first time, depending on your connection speed.

If it opens correctly, you should see a message come up that says:
Welcome,

You have entered Chat Lobby.
To the right of the message box, you should see your username listed, along with the names of any other users who are present. Above, you should see the word "Online", on a blue background. If you click on the down arrow at the right end of the blue field, a dropdown menu will allow you to select "Away", in case you want to step away for a while. If you are the only one there, for example, this would tell anyone else who came along that you are away, but plan to return. If you use it, be sure to select "Online" when you return. It's not necessary to use the "Away" selection, since if you wish to step away from the chat for a while, all you have to do is mention it in the chat.

Below the message is a long light yellow, or beige-colored window, where you key in your message, and when finished, clicking the blue "Send" button will post your message. If your words don't show up in the long narrow window when you begin typing, you may have to click on the window, to get the cursor located there, so that it will accept your typing. Hitting the return button on the keyboard will post your message, also. The icons lined up along the bottom of the message window are "toys/tools" that you can use for various effects, or various functions, (for example, clicking on the smiley on the left end, will open a window with emoticons that you can click on to add to your message, and clicking on the icon of the door, on the right end, will log you out). You can play with them ahead of time to see what they do, or you can click on the "question mark" icon, and you will see a page that explains all those things, plus many more options. Note that not all options are available on all versions of the chat room. We are currently using the latest free version, I believe. If we ever start using the chat room more, we could add the other options, by paying a monthly subscriber fee, and altering the code, slightly.

Note that you do not have to log in to the chat room separately. If you are logged into the board, then you will be automatically logged into the chat room when you click on the "Chat" icon. Only members logged into the board can see the chat room, obviously - it is invisible to the public, or members not logged in. To hear the sounds, obviously your speakers have to be on. If you have any questions, just ask, or you can ask as you go, during a chat. The chats usually last anywhere from about an hour, to two or three, and are always a lot of fun.

Right, it's like IM, except for the number of people responding, which can make it interesting, sometimes.

Actually, I'm a slow and deliberate typist. I used to be fairly fast, at one time, but I waste a lot of time rewriting things, as I change my mind about how I want to phrase it. LOL. I'm sure you're a lot faster than I am. I'm just spending a lot of time at the computer today, writing posts, because I don't yet feel like working.

OMGoodness, I was frustrated last night. I kept getting to the chat and then everything would stop and I either couldn't see what I typed or I would see one sentence of someone else's and then nothing, so I kept refreshing, allowed the pop-ups, removed the cookies, tried the home computer that is connected to the cable, thinking maybe it was my router, etc.
Maybe the chat was just slow....lol....anyways, I only caught a few sentences so maybe I'll try next time.
I bought a cheap router since at the time, I was the only one with a laptop, then my daughter got one for graduation and when her friend moved in, she brought hers so now we're running three of them. Sheesh!

Sorry for being disruptive and popping in and out while I was trying to figure it out!

Not a problem. I just felt bad because I know how crazy I get with computer malfunctions.

Babsey,

If your home computer had the same issues, then the most likely problem is that the Java installation you were using is corrupt. You can download the latest version here:

http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

What browser are you using?
