EnteroLab results in-Questions!

Post by suzil »

Here are my daughter's results:

C) Egg, Yeast, and Soy Food Sensitivity Stool Panel
Fecal anti-ovalbumin (chicken egg) IgA antibody 6 Units (Normal Range <10 Units)

Fecal Anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae (dietary yeast) IgA 6 Units (Normal Range <10 Units)

Fecal Anti-Soy IgA 9 Units (Normal Range <10 Units)
Gluten Sensitivity Stool Test
Fecal Antigliadin IgA 35 (Normal Range <10 Units)

Cow's Milk Protein Sensitivity Stool Test
Fecal anti-casein (cow's milk) IgA antibody 19 Units (Normal Range <10 Units)

Still trying to process this...Bummed about the casein because she did give it a short-term run & had no improvement-it's tricky!
First questions for those of you who have been down this road...(notice I said first..probably more to come..)
We had no baseline from the lab to go by as this is the first time we've done this.

1-Is it possible that elimination of casein for a period may be enough to "recover" and eventually reintroduce dairy?
2-Gluten sensitivity is basically a no-brainer for us-she is definitely gluten sensitive, BUT-these numbers? Could she have registered a 3,035 before going GF a year ago at age 20, and this might show an improvement OR is there some significance that she is over limits now..like is she currently being unknowingly glutened?
3-Should we be concerned about the soy being so close to normal limits?

Many thanks!

Hi Sue,

Here are my thoughts:

1. Not likely - that's a pretty solid test result, but stranger things have happened, I suppose.

2. Gliadin antibodies can be detected by these stool tests for about a year. If she has been GF for over a year, it's certainly possible that she is still ingesting some gluten. I don't believe the numbers ever get over a hundred, but I could be wrong. The folks at Enterolab could tell you, but generally, the size of the number is meaningless, except that a 10 or more means a positive result. As I understand it, it's possible that her body may still producing antibodies at that level, a year after removing gluten from her diet, since about a year is the approximate cut-off point. I would guess that we are all different in that respect. I would check her diet carefully for gluten, though.

3. Again, a result below 10 should be considered to be unequivocally negative.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Sue,

How quickly did your daughter's results come back? They received my daughter's specimen on Wednesday.

Thanks!

Thanks for your input Tex-I really do appreciate it! I am still "digesting" this info!

CMom-

15 days from when they received it. Think they said to allow 3 weeks.

** One thing I wish I knew from the get-go...You MUST reuse the box the kit comes in to resend. Our kit was routed through an out-of-state friend since they do not operate officially with NY addresses. It had already taken a beating and I had to use a lot of tape
