Hi, it's me, Karen

I have been doing a little "work" in the room that's called "information about diet". I am not sure if we are allowed to copy text from other sites to paste into this site? Anyone know? Wayne? I did state which sites I copied the text from.

Another question for you is: "Would you rather that we write these things in our own words instead of using what others have already written?"

Please, take a look in the "Information on the diet" room to see what you think. OK?! Thanks.

Love,
Karen

Hi ya Karen,

How did you get into that diet room? I tried to get into the Newbie room to put the "newbie welcome" draft there but couldn't get in. It is locked I think.

I guess we should poll everyone to see what the consensus is about using our own words or quoting the "horse's mouth". My preference (at least for the newbie room where I've been working) is simple, concise language. But for the more advanced rooms, depth may be better? What does everyone think? Also, I guess Wayne better answer the question about copying texts. I sure don't know if there are any legal issues with that or not.

Anyway, congrats to you for plunging ahead with some writing. Way to go, girl!

Love,

Polly

About the dietary stuff, Karen

Post by Lucy »

I like the way there was a short explanation before a detailed one on the topic, "Gluten."

Do you think you could come up with a brief statement in a similar way before the detailed explanation of "The Gluten Free Diet" that would be clear enough for those not looking for so much detail? In other words, just like you did with "Gluten."

Wish I knew more about copyright stuff on the net, but have no experience there. Guess you could always get some sort of written permission from those owners.

Thanks!!! Yours, Luce

Copywrite Issues

Post by tex »

Karen,

In a nutshell, yes, plagiarism is illegal, as several high-visibility writers have discovered in recent years. Many scientific sites clearly state their policies with regard to copyrighted material. Most will allow the material to be reproduced for non-profit purposes, PROVIDED that the source is properly documented. On the other hand, some sites expressly prohibit any reproduction of their material for any purposes, and without regard to proper attribution.

If no policy is stated, and the copyright symbol is present somewhere on the page, and/or article, (and it almost surely is, no matter how well hidden), it's safe to assume that reproduction is prohibited. In that case, careful rephrasing of the wording will usually do the job. Be very careful about quotes, though--that right is granted only if permission is expressly stated, and the origin must be properly referenced.
Love,
Wayne

P S Polly, you're correct about the locks on the respective rooms, I left your room locked so that no one could post to it. I'll see if I can grant you exclusive permission to author it. I apologize--I intended to do that, and forgot about it. If if still doesn't allow you to enter, please let me know, and I'll do something else.

Good Morning,

Wayne, please go ahead and enable Polly to post in the Newbie room - everyone seemed to like her intro to newbies and there is not reason not to post it in the room.

Wow, looks like I better delete the 2 posts I put in the diet room last night, doesn't it Wayne? In fact, I wouldn't mind if you will do it for me. I am headed out of town right now; when I come back I will delete the posts if you haven't done it. I don't want to get in any kind of trouble with the law....

I will be happy to write the same posts in my own wording - so look out for them! And Lucy, I liked the short description/definition first followed by a more in depth explanation too. I'll try to incorporate that pricip.

Love,
Karen

Karen,

Not a problem. I'll leave it, so that it will be easier for you to see what you are doing, when you edit it later.

I hope you have a safe and enjoyable trip.

Love,
Tex

Hi guys,
Just my two cents worth here - I like reading sites that explain things in a simple, 'Readers Digest' way, and provide a link to the original source in case you want to read it in it's original language. It give the reader two explanations of the same concept, also, so that hopefully one of them is a format that makes sense.

Hi,

I appreciate the feedback from all of you. It sounds like Lucy and Marsha are both on to more or less the same thing - something that is easily digestable at first; then some more in depth elaboration on the subject and/or some links to more in depth discussions or articles.

Polly, I see you got into the newbie room - great that Wayne removed that little hurdle. Thank you for your encouragement to start writing - it looks as if I will have to actually compose my own texts on the subjects due to copyright laws etc. This is going to be an opportunity to get to know the material very well.

Wayne, thank you for the reassurance. In the heat of the moment I forgot that we are not viewable by the public - well, I will not panic

With all this in mind I am going to write new texts - I wish I had more time. Anyone else feel this way too?!

Love,
Karen
