You'll love Passover if you're intolerant to soy

Post by Gloria »

If you're intolerant to soy, you'll be interested in knowing that Jewish tradition apparently doesn't allow consumption of soy during Passover. This means that the following products are available only during that time of the year:

Soy-free margarine
I've never found any margarine without soy, other than Mother's margarine during Passover. I bought over a dozen tubs, but they were each $4. I use the margarine in baking, with some adjustments for the extra liquid.

Soy-free chocolate candy, including candy bars, confections and chocolate chips.
I bought 24 bags of Passover-approved chocolate chips for $1.69 each (1/2 price) after Passover was over. I'm eating them now without any problems.

Soy-free aerosol vegetable spray

There may be other products, but these were the ones I was most interested in. I waited from August of last year to April of this year for the opportunity to stock up on these products. I will try to remember to remind you when Passover approaches in the spring.

How the holidays can help with food issues, and too bad these things aren't available more often. Maybe manufacturers should be made aware that others enjoy these products for medical reasons. My uncle has diabetes and finds the little packs of Necco Waffers that are only available around Halloween have just the right amount of sugar/carbs to get is sugars up if they drop too low without going too high and thus starting a wild ride of trying to get things back in balance. My aunt stocks up at Halloween for the rest of the year!

 Enjoy Life has dairy, soy and gluten free micro mini chocolate chips but I don't seem to tolerate them. I do LOVE chocolate.

I was dipping the gross Enjoy Life bars into melted chocolate chips.

Dee,
I live in a suburb north of Chicago and there are a few towns with high Jewish populations in the area. I travel to those towns to get the products in the grocery stores. I don't know if you can order them online or not. I can look online when Passover approaches. You might want to call a temple near you. They might be able to tell you where you can purchase Kosher products in your area.

Katy,
Thanks for the tip. My husband is diabetic, too and the Necco Wafers sound perfect for him.

Joan,
I'm familiar with the Enjoy Life chocolate chips. I haven't had any problems eating them. They are more readily available at Whole Foods and other stores, but are $3.69 and up by me. I was excited to be able to get the other chocolate chips for 1/2 price after Passover. I bought all that the store had. I also bought as many chocolate candy bars as I could find. If you can't tolerate the Enjoy Life chocolate chips, it's possible that you are intolerant to chocolate. One way you could test is to make something with cocoa, which doesn't have any cocoa butter or soy in it.

You can order online at Kosher.com
They have the Mother's margarine, (sticks & tubs)
They have the chocolate chips, etc..
Gloria, do you use the tub margarine or the stick???
Also, what brand are the chocolate chips and other chocolate items???
I can post some really good cookie recipes if some of you can get your hands on the margarine!! :chef2:

I've never been able to find the sticks in the grocery store, so I just use the tub. The chocolate chips are Lieber's. I don't remember what brand the chocolate bars were. I ate them all already.

The problem is that I think they make these products with soy most of the year, and have special runs without it only during passover. That's what a Jewish teacher at my school told me last year. They don't list the ingredients on the website. I would email them before I ordered anything. You might be able to ask them when they begin shipping Passover items. Why don't manufacturers understand that there is a market for margarine without soy? The manufacturers of Kosher products aren't making them for people like us with intolerances, of course. Their market is the Jewish community.

I just made some chocolate chip cookies for the first time using the margarine. The first batch was terrible - the cookies looked like lace and fell apart. So I added one more cup of flour to the remaining batter and, walla - they were perfect. I don't know if I forgot to add a second cup to the original batter or if the margarine had more water in it than I thought.

Gloria,
You may find when making cookies to prevent them from either spreading out on the baking sheet or falling apart that if your recipe calls for all butter or margarine, use 1/2 margarine and half shortening, like Spectrum. Perfect every time and they don't spread out or crumble.
I may try emailing the website and asking some questions.
