I'm thinking about filing for disability this week online. I'm just wondering do they consider IBD a disease that could get some part of disability? I have other medical problems as well. But the IBD is just one of them.

Any advice?

Hi Tami,

Yes it can qualify, especially if have other issues that prevent you from being able to work. You might be interested in these links to past discussions:

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Interesting you brought this up, i was going to do a similar post. I am an entomologist and my job requires long periods in the woods looking for insects. It also requires long car rides to various places and a lot of out of town travel to meetings and conferences. I am not going to file right now, want to give it a year to see if i can get it under control first.
However, I have spent a few months researching disability. I work for the fed. gov. so my situation may be diffrerent than yours but if anything I would assume the fed. govt. is stricter, maybe not.
MC definitely qualifies for my job. Disability would require only that i cannot do my PRESENT job, it does not mean that I cannot work elsewhere. A job that does not require a lot of outdoor work would be something I could do.
I know there are disability retirement laywers, you should contact one just for info. as i did.
I read of some people who got disability and it amazed me. Some got it because they had panic attacks and could not fly on airplanes, something that was required for govt. travel. One guy got it because he could not sit in a chair for long periods. He said he goes out dancing all the time, playing golf, etc.. but because he could not sit in a chair as his job required, he got disablilty.
I do think there is abuse, no doubt. However, i dont think anyone could consider MC abuse. My parnter Dave is a physics teacher, highschool. He says all the time that he could not do his job with my condition, could not leave the room two or three times in a class period. Many jobs are impossible to do with this condition. Like I said, i work for the govt. (Dept. of Agriculture) and it may be different in the private sector, but for govt. purposes MC would definitely qualify.
I am looking at other careers, thinking of going to school to study to be a pharmacy technician. It is indoor work, and over the last month of having to have prescriptions on a regular basis (something I have never needed except for my thyroid meds until MC) I can see how an understanding person behind the counter can make all the difference in the world.
Do you mind if i ask what you do for work? I would assume if your job required being away from, or unable to get away to use, a bathroom whenever needed that you would qualify.
Let me know what you find out.
