What did you eat today?

Post by Matthew »

This question often came up in the GF Kitchen on the old site and was always a lot of fun and a great way to expand food repertoires. It doesn’t matter if you are on the GF diet. Who knows, we could all come up with some new ideas

For me

Breakfast- Left over salmon that I did on the barbecue. Steamed zuchinni with spices . Green tea.

Snack- half an apple dipped in almond butter.

Lunch- Chicken cooked with aromatic vegetables. Half an apple

Snack- a few almonds and and hand full of fresh Colorado bing cherries that I bought at the farmers market Sunday.

Dinner-Barbecued Pork cutlet, Small salad with oil and vinegar, Green beans and winter squash.

So what did you eat? :coffee2: :pepsi: :chef2: :drinking:

Hmmm...you picked a boring day in my life to ask this....but breakfast is my normal, and it was just one of those days.

B: orange juice, coffee, yogurt smoothie (Stoneyfield Farms), grapes.
L: Left over pork rib grilled the night before, chocolate milk, more grapes, Mounds bar (bad I know).
D: Hotdogs (had the kids), mashed potato (anyone seen the Country Crock pre-made side dishes? We got potato and Mac and Cheese at BJ's a few weeks ago and I hear they have a rice dish...I can eat the potato it seems and it saves that whole aggrevation of cooking and mashing potato), a pear, a few hersey kisses.

Maybe today will be better, but I'm not holding my breath...in fact if Geoff didn't take them all, I'll probably have the same Breakfast and Lunch (minus the mounds bar...I really am trying to cut back on my candy intake). Dinner will be a quick or out to eat tonight because we have to go watch the girls run in a summer track meet this evening (if it stops raining. Erin cleaned up in the 5-year old age bracket last week. Of course she will be 6 in September and could probably hold her own in that age bracket as well.).

Hi Matthew,

It's good to see you!!

I don't remember what I ate yesterday - I am hurrying too much sometimes and forget what I have done as soon as I have done it; on to the next thing....
I try to find time to meditate (Whereever you go etc.) every day - sometimes I simply just have my thoughts bombard my mind while doing it and returning the focus to my breath is almost lost in the quagmire (sp?). I will not score high on any charts concerning aspirations to become a zen master  But it is interesting to observe how out of control my thoughts are and how the mind has it's own "mystirous ways" - I have found too, that there are several voices that are bombarding the mind with words or sentences that are being repeated over and over when I sit down; perhaps in an attempt to make sure I don't get to focus on my breath or the present moment. Alas, that's the present moment - the noice my mind makes

OOOOPs, very much off topic

Matthew, please keep posting; you inspire us all - I am very curious about your barbeque sauce; will you share your MI recipe?

Love,
Karen

Lessee....

Yesterday.....

Breakfast: applesauce

snack: rice cereal (Health Valley, GF)

lunch: salad from the grocery store - lettuce, onions, mushrooms, tomato, turkey and ham chunks, light french dressing (may contain gluten).

dinner: meatballs (fresh made by me :) - beef and pork sausage), GF BBQ sauce made by me (but I did find out later it does have a little corn syrup in it), and baked beans.

Not one of my INTERESTING days.. but few are. I, like Katy, am constantly tempted by candy. I have ALWAYS had a sweet tooth, and now that chocolate is DEFINITELY off limits, my sugar cravings are going MAD. Anyone have a way to tame my sugar cravings?? lol Fruits bother me - many make me very sick these days, so I'm not sure I can increase my fruit intake..

B: Two cups of decaf/ regular coffee and a fresh fig.

L: Ham and cheese sandwich with tomato and pickles with NO lettuce. LOTS of mustard.

D: Filet mignon with mushrooms.....oh, no, that was in my dreams. Forget about it.

D: Left over bbq chicken sliced, baked potato, and a couple more fresh figs.

Snack: Blueberries from the bushes outside. All day. Just stood there and grazed.

Tonight I am treating myself to sauteed scallops!!!! My favorite.

Love,

Sally

Wow Peg!

You WERE bad!

Christine,

You know, your sugar cravings remind me of me. Also, the almost constant pain you seem to have in your abdomen, reminds me of the almost constant pain I have in my gut for days, (and sometimes weeks), after I eat any significant amount of sugar. (Like I have had since Saturday, and still have, due to drinking a glass of lemonade with a minimal amout of sugar).

Yeaterday:

breakfast - 2 hardboiled eggs

dinner, (noon) - broiled chicken wings, baked potato

supper, (evening) - nuked, left over grilled pork steak, Lay's potato chips

Today, (so far):

breakfast - 2 nuked leftover chicken wings

dinner, (noon) - chicken & potato soup, (hoping it will be easier on the gut)

Tex,

SSSSHHHHHHH!!!!!!! I'm in denial.

((I can still eat sugar, I can still eat sugar, I can still eat sugar.. )
:hyper:

So... you have these intense cravings too?? How do you stave them??? I was seriously thinking of buying a whole lot of those maple candies, but I'm afraid even THEY won't help. It's all I can do to avoid shoving a candy bar down my throat, so I have some skittles instead sometimes. What I NEED is something that will SATISFY the craving and make it go away. I am a chocolate ADDICT people. I used to eat at least one candy bar's worth of chocolate a day, if not more.

Well to be honest Christine, maple candy might be a good trick. It is pure sugar (like putting a teaspoon of sugar in your mouth), but they are so sweet that eating too many in one sitting isn't as probable. Now there are those of us who are exceptions to that rule, but hey, maybe it would help. Besides, skittles have all those unnatural colors in them etc. And probably have corn syrup which I know you are trying to cut back on. You system may tolerate "natural" sugar better.

Katy,

O WISE ONE, you're right - see, I KNOW that Skittles have the corn syrup and colors and flavours.. I'm just too hopelessly addicted to sugar to care sometimes LOL I'm sure you know how i feel. It's like quitting smoking. Your brain will do ANYTHING to rationalize getting "some of that".

Get this: LAST weekend, we had an anniversary party for some grandparents. They sent us home with some cake for the kids. Hunter likes to SAVE his food, so he had a few bites, and it's been sitting in the fridge since. Now, every time I open that fridge, I see it, and I can almost taste it. It was so bad that this past weekend, I was thinking "I wonder.. if I just put it in my mouth and chewed it for awhile and then spit it out.. would I react to it then?" LOL Probably yes. I'd probably get gum disease or something, my luck LOL

Christine,

Wow! You are addicted if you've actually contemplated that. LOL.

I'll tell you what, though. Back before this MC stuff came along, I would go to the local Sam's store, every few weeks, and bring back at least several boxes of Hershey bars, Snickers, (my favorite), M & Ms, Reese's, etc., plus big boxes of sweet rolls, doughnuts, danishes, etc.

I would have a bar of candy with a coke, (I'm talking big bars here, too), during a mid-morning break, and if I didn't have ice cream or pie or cake for desert at noon, I'd have another candy bar. For a mid-afternoon break--yep, probably another candy bar with a coke. Is it any wonder that I developed leaky gut syndrome?

Even after I started getting sick, I kept eating a lot of candy bars, until I finally figured out that I was gonna have to cut out all dairy products, and so that put milk chocolate off limits. I still ate some once in a while, but finally stopped that altogether, when I cut out corn.

The thing that concerns me the most about these candy cravings, is the fact that we tend to crave the foods that we are intolerant to, so that makes it pretty obvious that we shouldn't be eating this stuff.

Tex,

I'm confused.. Chocolate is something I crave, yes.. but I also crave healthy things, like carrots or brocolli, beef, or a burger specifically, stuff like that.. I thought the body usually craved something if it needed some nutritional component of that food. Chocolate is a little different.. not sure if that's an addiction to the sweet taste or the emotional elation or if they drug it or what.. mmmmmm ok, all this talk about chocolate has REALLY got me craving it LOL. I think I'll go pace the kitchen now..

Christine, I'm with you and Tex with the candy bars. A candy bar does NOT last through the day in the house (or anywhere else) with me. I've been known to tell my husband "eat it or lose it" when he leaves "his" laying around.

I do love chocolate - Milk Chocolate!!

Christine,

While it is true that chocolate has some proven benefits, (such as leading to increased longevity), we crave it because it can trigger the brain's production of natural opiates. It's not mere coincidence that some women prefer chocolate to sex.

While it's generally true that many animals tend to seek out foods that are most benificial for them, I'm not sure that humans have retained that characteristic through the evolutionary process. The falacy of that theory can be easily verified by observing what people carry out of McDonald's, and other fast food joints.

Check this site, if you would like to see some of the special attributes of chocolate:
