Do You Still Have Your Tonsils?

Post by tex »

Hi All,

Did you know that tonsils are a part of the immune system? I'm curious how many of us have had our tonsils removed. I would appreciate it if you would respond to this poll.

Thanks,
Tex

Greengirl,

Because they're part of the immune system, and a recent discovery indicates that they produce a type of cell that might play a part in providing an anti-inflammatory effect in the GI tract, which suggests that they could play a part in helping to protect the GI tract from IBDs.

Wayne,

The heavy use of antibiotics while growing up could certainly be a major contributor to the problems that you are having now. Antibiotics are certainly necessary sometimes, and they do save lives, but they also weaken the immune system, and it's also possible that you've been living with dysbiosis ever since those days.

Dysbiosis refers to an imbalance of flora and/or fauna in the intestines, IOW, skewed populations, so that "bad" bacteria have the upper hand.
