Bad News About A Big Cholocate Manufacturer

Post by tex »

Hi All,

I was always under the impression that all we had to watch out for in Lindt chocolates, was soy, which can be found in certain of their products. Well, now soy is not the only problem. Apparently all of their chocolate products contain gluten, (in the form of barley malt).

I'm not sure how long this has been going on, but I noticed it on the following site. You can click on the "(pdf)" link, to read the statement by a company representative, (written about a year ago):

http://www.healthyvilli.com/products/Pr ... or_000.php

Note, also, that Godiva chocolates contain gluten, according to a statment from the company, posted there.

There have long been rumors that Lindt chocolates contained barley malt, (or barley malt extract), but the company always claimed that the gluten content was under the 20 ppm threshold, which allows a product to be certified gluten-free in Europe. Apparently, either they have increased the amount of gluten in their products, or, (most likely), testing has shown their original claim to be false. You may recall that McDonalds also had to back down on their gluten-free claims for their french fries, after a lot of bad publicity and a lawsuit a year or two ago.

Anyway, maybe it isn't just the soy that we react to with a lot of these, and similar products - maybe they have just been a bit too cavalier with their claims of being gluten-free.

Lindt chocolates make me screamingly ill. BUT Green & Black's Dark 70% chocolate does not, and it's available now at more places. I've found it at Target lately.

Hmmm. Makes you wonder if other chocolates include barley malt in their products.

Morning,

Both Lindt and Godiva have been off my list for years now since they always sent me running to the loo. Another to include in that list would be the holiday chocolates put out by Disney - no manufacturer or label but Disney. Their Peanut Butter chocolate Halloween candies rank right up there with Lindt & Godiva.

Love, Maggie

P.S. - Have also found a terrible reaction to Palmer's chocolates.
