Augmentin
Do you know if augmentin messes up the stomach any? For the last couple of days I have more than a few bowel movements not diarrhea still kinda hard but just more frequent. I'm just wondering if that part from the augmentin.
Tami,
Yes, Augmentin is a brand of amoxicillin, and it has a reputation of being one of the worst antibiotics available, as far as digestive system problems are concerned. The problem is that it kills all the bacteria in the intestines, (including all the good ones, that are required for proper digestion), and not only can that upset digestion, and cause D, but without all those good bacteria in the gut, bad bacteria will often move in to take their place, and that can have serious consequences.
It should be illegal for doctors to prescribe Augmentin to patients who have MC, (unless the Augmentin is necessary to save the patient's life), because in many cases, if the patient does not take a good probiotic when the antibiotic treatment comes to an end, the patient will end up with a serious infection from C. diff, that can be very, very difficult to get rid of, because many C. diff strains are becoming antibiotic-resistant.
Please buy a good probiotic, and begin taking it a few hours after you take the last Augmentin treatment, so that the probiotic can help to prevent you from getting a C. diff infection.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Tami,
The next time your doctor prescribes an antibiotic, ask him or her if Ciproflaxacin, (we usually just refer to it as Cipro), would work just as well. For most of us who have tried it, Cipro does not cause any digestive system upset, and in fact, if we are having D before we take it, it will actually stop the D.
