Question for Tex (or anyone else who has info.)

Post by Andi »

Tex,
I have been busy and have not been reading this board other than when I get an hour or two free time in the last few weeks. I have been catching up on reading some of the posts and noticed that more than once you mentioned Asacols possible connection to Pancreatis (sp?). I am very concerned about this and would really appreciate any links, or any more you can tell me.
As you know, I was on Asacol for a bit over 2 months but stopped because I was having bad side effects. I am guessing that just over two months is not enough time for causing pacreaitis, but I am still interested in reading anything you wish to post.
The problem with many of these new meds is that not enough time has passed for long term research. 5 or 6 years is not much time for scientific research.
I want to thank you for keeping so informed on so many different issues concening MC and medications and side effects, you are a great source of info. for people like me.

Andi,

You're right, much of this is uncharted waters, because of the huge amount of time normally involved in recognizing a research-worthy project, planning it, jumping through the necessary hoops, and actually taking it to completion.

I believe the second post in this thread, (one of my posts), contains the type of information that you're seeking. If that doesn't adequately address your question, please let me know, and I'll look further.

Thank you Tex. I printed out the articles you linked to me. I am going to read them and then do more research online.
I thank you for alerting me to this.
I have been done with the medications ever since i stopped using Asacol. I am not going to use Entocort or any other drug. I am either going to solve this thru diet and Chinese medicine. or i am just going to live with the flares when i get them. No more drugs. I feel it is drugs that gave me this condition in the first place (years of ibuprofen use for degenerative disc disease in neck) and I dont wish to continue more drugs. I had severe side effects with Asacol, effects which stopped when i went off the drug. I would rather experience the MC than have more things develop from drug cures. I am hopeful diet will help, already have started changing diet.

Andi,

If you come across any "smoking guns" in your research on that topic, please don't keep us in the dark, because a lot of members try the 5-ASA meds, at one time or another.

Best of luck with your diet changes. It's a tough project, but it gets easier as you go, and the rewards make it well worth while. I hope you're not soy intolerant, because that would be really bad news, in view of your vegetarian lifestyle. We'll assume you're not, and hope for the best.

As always, you're most welcome.

Hi Andi,

Since you are interested in alternative treatments, did you see my post several days ago on boswellia? It is extracted from a tree and was mentioned by my GI doc as something that may help with inflammatory bowel disease. Tex has ordered some and can provide further info.

I'll bet you anything that you can put your MC into remission just the way you are planning to.

Changing your diet should help immensely. Just one caveat re the Chinese medicine......be careful that the preparations do not contain any grains or other potential intolerances. Also, remember that there is no oversight of these preps. Studies have shown that if you test two bottles of the same stuff from the same company on the same shelf, you may find widely differing concentrations of active ingredient......from next to nothing to a thousand times that.

I KNOW that you are on the road to health because you have taken charge of your treatment plan. Congrats!

Love,

Polly

I am the one who posted the original thread about pancreatitis and Asacol. I have had pancreatits twice and my docotrs are still trying to figure out what is causing it. They feel that since i haven't taken Asacol for over a year that isn't the cause. I do know since i have a history of pancreatitis they will never put me on Asacol again. If you have specific question about my experience please email me. My server is aol and my screen name is the same as my log in here.
