Casein score from enterolab questions

Hey Guys...

So I did some researching today and found my enterolab scores... 40 for gluten and Fecal anti-casein (cow's milk) IgA antibody 15 Units (Normal Range <10 Units).

I know that one should not base their "interolance level" off of the #s because as Dr Fine says if you are one above the threshold then you are intolerant-

But I am wondering if it may be possible to add casein back into my diet at some point? I would really really really like some cheese and ice cream... it would make the pizza taste so much better!

I remember Tex saying that he was intolerant of casein at one point and now dabbles with it being in hsi diet??

Hi Andrew,

That's not impossible, because the reason why our immune system reacts to casein in the first place, is because it is confused, and parts of the amino acid chain for casein are very similar to the gladin segment of the amino acid chain for gluten. Maybe the immune system can become "unconfused", in some cases, after remission is achieved.

If you want to test it, IMO, doing so is not particularly risky, since casein shouldn't cause long-term damage to the intestines, the way that gluten does. IOW, if you are still intolerant, you might have a reaction, but the reaction shouldn't last any longer than it takes for the casein to pass through your system.

To be honest, though, I doubt that you will be lucky enough for that to happen, because if I recall correctly, you have double DQ2 genes, which predisposes you to the possibility of more intolerances, and more difficulty in achieving remission, when compared with those of us who do not have a "double DQ" gene arrangement. Maybe you can prove me wrong, though. I hope so.

Here's another possibility, though. If you don't ingest any dairy products for several years, then eventually your body may stop producing antibodies to dairy products. That means that if you eat dairy, it might take a while to develop a sufficient level of those antibodies to trigger a reaction. IOW, you might be able to get away with eating some dairy products, initially. Each time you eat them, though, the antibody production will be reinforced, and at some point, (probably sooner, rather than later), you will begin to react, again. That's uncharted water, though, and I'm sure we are all different in how we would respond in that situation.

I hear ya! I miss dairy, too - especially cheese. If you decide to be a guinea pig, I'll be following your trial of casein with great interest. Keep us posted.

I did recently determine that I was intolerant of eggs. Once I eliminated them, I found that I can now tolerate tomato and citrus, which used to be a problem. So maybe there are some relationships there that can change.

I think our best hope is that pill that Dr. Fasano now has in clinical trials. It might allow us to eat whatever we want without problems. Exciting, huh?

Dr Fasano is the one who is trying to make an "intollerance pill?" I read about that a while back- I bet the insurance companies deny it to a bunch of people since it is not medically accepted that gluten and other food interollerances have a direct relationship with MC. I can just see my insurance company doing that.

Tex- I do have both genes that are needed for Celiac disease but I never progressed to that point (mainly thanks to this site). I thought it might be a long shot but oh well... Maybe I will try one day a little further down the road.

I may have accidentally ingested casein at some point while on my diet- but with all the ups and downs I could never really tell.

These days I am able to eat many more things I couldnt before. Like the gluten free beer used to make my stomach hurt- now as long as I dont overdue (no more than a 6 pack a week) it I am ok. Chocolate and other "Sweets" used to be a big no no especially at first- now I seem not to have a problem unless I go overboard. Another example is dinner last night- Fried chicken (of course with gf ingredients) and spinach and mushroom rice-- needless to say the fried chicken would have ripped right thru me and the spinach and mushroom would be soon to follow!!

It does take a while but I am glad that i stuck with it. Now to get rid of the anxiety and depression... I hate trying new meds every month or so-- side effects are nuts going on and worse coming off.

Where have ya been??????? Missed you.
With interest I caught in your last post about the anxiety and depression and all the meds that usually end up getting the thumbs down.
In my experience, I could not use ANY of the SSRI"S on the market. Within 3 days I'd have the anti-depressant squirts!! :lol:
There are 2 known to me that don't have that impact on me.
EffexorXR (of which I am on now) and it is working. Started out at 35mgs for 2 weeks then went to 75mgs ..
Wellbutrin is the other one
As far as the anxiety meds the best one that I have found that really works is Klonopin.
I only take 0.5mgs 2x a day
Now , this is coming from someone who has suffered with clinical depression for years and generalized anxiety disorder.
Nobody knows what it is like that has never had that problem.
