Hi Karen,

I hope you and your family have a safe and happy trip.

I'll bet you're probably packing a lot of GF snacks, and maybe even meals, but that beats the Hell out of packing diapers and wet-wipes, doesn't it.

:ciao:

Flooding in parts of Atlanta with T.S.

Post by Lucy »

Wow, sure hope you didn't run into any of the remainder of the trophical storm. Friend in Roswell just told me tonight that there was flooding in Atlanta, and they were having quite a storm in Roswell, just north of Atlanta.

Do let us know that you've arrived home as soon as you can, please.

Yours, Luce

Hi Friends,

I am back from Atlanta - we had a good time. Drove back in last night; arrived back in Columbia at 3:30 am..... Oooooh, I am tired today.

Lucy, we did run into the storm on the way - it wasn't until an hour before reaching our destination that it started to rain; but it rained very hard and Interstate 20 actually was flooded for a short distance - it was scary to drive through knee high water but we were in a relatively big car (truck with U-haul trailer) so our feet stayed dry. There had been rather hard gusts of wind and some damage in different parts of Atlanta - we didn't have any problems to speak of and didn't see any particular damage ourselves.

It was a combination of business and joy trip. Our children spent the night and saturday with their Aunt, Uncle and Cousins at their home and had a great time at the pool. David and I had dinner with them after working all Saturday at the biggest antiques show in the South-East. David's sister lives in the northern part of town (off Roswell Road in Sandy Springs, Lucy) and as the antiques show is south of the City we drove 30 miles to get there. Right off the interstate is a Whole Foods so we of course HAD to stop and see the place. I was very impressed with the freshness and the appealing displays of all the goods - the juice bar looked very tempting but I didn't try it as we were having dinner with the family. I did have a good laugh when I read the price signs in the fruit bins. If it was not an organic fruit the signs read: "Conventional" - David and I both thought it was a hillarious way to say "Regular" and it brought smiles on our lips; you see, normally, around here it doesn't say anything unless the product is Organic; then it will say "Organic", otherwise it is simply Pineapple or Cantalope or whatever. Yes, I am a country girl!

The store was so big I didn't have time to explore it all. I picked up some crystallized ginger that is very good and also some fig/almond "cake" which I have not yet tasted but it looks good.

There is a healthfood market in Columbia that is called Earthfare which is very similar to Whole Foods; now I don't feel so jalous of Whole Foods any more - but it was beautiful and I enjoyed breathing in the aromas of all the baked goods and I loved the colorful displays of salads etc in the very large deli. I must say, it is almost harder to shop there than at a "Conventional" (HAHAHAHA) grocery store because there were just as many things I couldn't have at Whole Foods and it looked so much better than the regular grocery store products.

I took some real risks with food this time, Wayne. I did pack a lot of snacks and some fresh cooked meat loaf for the trip - being away for two days and nights, you need a lot of food. However, the risk was when I decided to go out for chinese food with my family. We went to a large chinese restaurant that serves all the different sea food you can dream of and much more - I knew the place from my pre-MI time and I knew they have a Mongolian Grill. So I decided to try the Mongolian Grill since you can pick your own raw veggies and meats and ask them to cook it with the spices and oil of your choice while you watch. I chose sesame oil and water - no other spices or oils as I thought they would likely have soy or vegetable oil or something else dangerous in them. I ate that meal and some steamed crawfish, a few boiled shrimp and a rice/peanut/coconut ball for dessert. Also fresh fruit for dessert. I was ver nervous as the meal progressed because I felt insecure about the crawfish (had they been spiced or oiled with something I would react to?); I also felt insecure about the shrimp (they didn't taste very good so I had only a few) and I felt very insecure about the rice dessert even though I had asked three staffers about the contents etc. They didn't speak English very well.... and they didn't tell me all the ingredients. They said it was made from rice and water and peanuts and then rolled in coconut. I asked if that was all. Yes, they said. Then I asked, does it contain sugar? Yes, it does, they said. OH-OH; what kind of sugar, I asked? White sugar, they said. I asked if it was cane sugar? They said, they didn't know; just white sugar. Does it contain any dairy I asked? Well, I don't know, one of them said, ask the manager..... And on it went. So needless to say, I didn't know what I was getting myself into.

But the evening went without me developing a headache - I had the tiniest amount of gurgling and the next morning I had a little extra gas and foul smelling BM but no other symptoms or discomforts to report. I feel very lucky and blessed in every way.

I am glad to be home.

Karen,
It sounds like you had a really wonderful trip. I'm so glad the consequences of your meals had very little effect on how you felt. How wonderful that you were able to do all that.

Also glad you got to visit a Whole Foods. I hope to someday. It sounds very interesting.

I've never seen produce labled "conventional" either. I'm used to "normal" lables and as you said - If it's not labled organic then it isn't -

Hi Karen:

Sounds like you had a nice trip. I'm very interested in antiques and watch the Antiques Road Show a lot. My husband says it's boring, but he sure looks when he sees how much some things are worth.

Nice to get away and enjoy a little trip. We aren't going anywhere this summer, but have a trip planned to Quebes in late Sept. to visit my husband's cousin and family and that's when the beautiful Fall colours are happening. They live in a little town in the Laurantian Mts. and I've only been there once before but just loved it. I hope to get some fishing in this time.

Love - Momster

Momster,

That sounds like a wonderful trip is planned for you later this summer/fall. Are you going to stand in the stream with waders on an fish or how do you do it? What do you do if you catch a fish? Are you going to bring it home and cook it or do you throw it back into the water?

I love the fall and the change of colors of foliage - it's a beautiful sight. We usually go to the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina to see it.

I watch the Antiques Road Show with interest too - although I agree with your husband that it can be boring. Not all antiques are equally exciting. The value of certain things is stunning, I agree. Most of what I am in touch with on a daily basis is not that fabulous or rare; but it happens that something of extra value or beauty passes through our hands. Often the value of a given item has nothing to do with it's beauty - it is almost as if the value itself becomes the beauty of the piece; otherwise nobody would even care to keep it.

Love,
Karen
