I'm online again..............
........although it's rather slow to say the least. I have a new hard drive but I bought virus protection and I think I downloaded the "wrong" version for my computer. Anyway, I have sent a message to the "support" people and hopefully they can tell me what is needed to correct the problem. The speed is a lot like using the 10 year old computer that is in Pa. No fun at all, or rather it takes all the pleasure out of using it.
I am dried out from the "flood" but not put back together yet. Don't know yet how much the insurance will cover either. Don't know how big the bill is from the "cleanup company"...... In other words I am still very much "up in the air" waiting for answers and I'm not good at being in that position. However, I am learning to cope (I think).
I haven't read a lot of posts (I'll never catch up, especially at this speed) but I hope to check in at least once a day.
I know there are new people........I welcome all of you. So glad you found us and I pray this site will be as big a boon to you as it has for me.
I have missed you all.
Love, Shirley

Hi Shirley,
It's great to see you posting again. IMO, the big name anti-virus/firewall programs on the market these days, are notorious for overloading computer CPUs, corrupting the operating system, and undoing almost all of the speed gains made over the past few years, even when they're working as designed. I finally got fed up with them, and stopped using all of them, for that reason. I now use AVG Free Anti-virus, and the firewall built into Windows XP, plus Spybot Search and Destroy, and I'm a happy camper. Spybot S & D is another great free program, that will prevent any site from making any changes to your computer, (IOW, it will prevent them from installing any startup programs on your hard drive, without your permission). I hope you can get your computer straightened out.
Did you try running CHKDSK/F from a command prompt? That will check the disk, and repair any errors found, in case the problem lies in a directory or file on the disk.
We've missed you too.
Love,
Tex

I'm glad you're nearly finished with the flood cleanup. I hope insurance will cover everything. We got flooded about 10 years ago and insurance covered everything up to the amount of coverage we bought.
Tex is correct in saying that an antivirus program can slow down your PC. If you're at a different location, you may have a slower Internet connection, too. My daughter's connection in Utah is 5 times faster than mine at home and we both have DSL.
It's nice to see you posting again.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
Thanks for all the good wishes!!
I'm quite sure the "slowness" is because of the virus protection, etc. My connection (and my computer) had always been quite fast here (cable) and I'm very spoiled. HaHa The new hard drive I had to buy has "more of everything" than the old one had so I'm sure that's not the problem.
I purchased TrendMicro. I am e-mailing with them to see if something can be done. After further investivation I found I had downloaded the correct version. I told them that if the situation can't be corrected I want a refund and will uninstall their product. I had to send them a copy of a system file so they can see if there is some kind of conflict.
Tex, I am angry with myself for buying that since I was using the free AVG (per your advice) before my hard drive went kaput. I should have stuck with it. If TrendMicro can't improve things I'm going back it. Thanks.

Shirley,
TrendMicro is a good one, and I used to love it, but it can really slow things down. Also, if I remember correctly, that's the one where I had to turn it off, or I couldn't upload large image files, (it would always run forever, and finally abort).
Do you have a copy of PC Decrapifier? It's the best and fastest way to remove all the unwanted junk, (free trial versions of programs that you don't need or want), that comes on new computers these days. It's free, of course, and you can download the latest version here:

I heard from TrendMicro through e-mail. They tell me I don't have enough RAM memory. Suggested I double it. Son-in-Law stopping by today or tomorrow to see what can be done.
I went to the PC Decrapifier site and tried to do the free scan. TM wouldn't let me go any further. Said the page was "dangerous", gave me to option to let them know that I didn't think it should be "banned". I did click that button but it still wouldn't let my computer load the page. Didn't give me any options about that.
I could probably turn it off and download the program but then it might disable the program when I turned it back on????
I'll put the link in my favorites so I can get back to it later if I get rid of TM.
I have a lot of "running around" to do tomorrow. Between myself and Mom I have 3 appointments to keep. This week is a week of "catching up" on things like that. Have from one to three every day. Then it lets up for a week and then starts again but not as bad.
Take care people..........

Shirley,
I've never tried that registry repair program that you're talking about. I was referring to the program to the left of that ad, where the live link says "Version 2.0.0 Released" - that's the PC Decrapifier link. You only need to run the PC Decrapifier program one time, and that RegCure link is probably only going to let you run a "trial" one time, also, since that's not a free program. For all I know, it may be a good program - I'm just not acquainted with it.
For repairing the registry, and fixing all sorts of general windows problems, I believe the most highly rated program is "System Mechanic", and that's the one I use. It's not free, though. It's usually priced at around 30 bucks or so for the regular version. I use the "Regular" version, because the "Professional" version has a firewall, and a spyware program, and the usual "bloatware" that I don't need.
To view your system information, (to see how much system memory your computer has), click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information, and under the "System Summary" category, you should find "Total Physical Memory", (along with "Total Virtual Memory", or "Available System Memory"). That's the path in XP, anyway. Vista should be similar. To work well, for XP, you need 1,024.00 MB, (IOW, 1 GB), but for Vista, you really need twice that. I use 2 GB for XP. If you add memory, be sure to match the memory already in there, and/or put the largest capacity memory strip in the number 1 slot, so that your BIOS will properly recognize it.
I hope all the appointments go smoothly.
Love,
Tex
