Hi...I had to share the details of my scary morning with you. This summer I am working part time for Metro Parks and so decided to volunteer to lead an art program for kids at a family homeless shelter. A 15 year old girl was assigned to help me because the Parks Dept. doesn't want us going to the shelters alone. So, I talked to the girl last night and set-up the time and meeting place outside the shelter. I was there before the meeting time of 8:50 and waited and waited for the girl. I checked all over the vacinity with no luck. Finally at 9, I called her mom who was upset because the girl left home very early and was either walking or taking the bus to the shelter. I checked with both offices at the shelter and have to tell you that I was quietly very upset that she had walked! Some one was murdered 2 blocks from the shelter last week and it is not in a very nice part of town. I couldn't believe the mom let her young daughter walk almost 2 miles, part of which is in a very marginal area. So, I started the projects with the kids on my own. The mother even came to the shelter to see if her daughter had arrived...but still no sign of her!
Finally my cell phone rang about 10:30 and it was the girl. She showed up at 8 instead of 9 and when the building was locked and I was no where in sight, she walked to the local theater where she is doing an internship! She finally showed up around 11 and helped me for an hour. I really needed her help, but I was just happy that she was safe!!!!!! All's well that ends well! Thanks for letting me come here and vent...I was sort of shook-up, but couldn't let my young students know I was rattled!

I'm glad to hear that there was a happy ending to the story. You did very well to carry on with all that simmering inside you for hours. It's tough to be the rock of Gibraltar, when Mt. Vesuvius is threatening to erupt inside you. Obviously, you're a professional.

Wow! Scary. I'm glad she had the presence of mind to go to a place she was familiar with though instead of waiting in a rough neighborhood. Having waited for people on the streets of Boston for various activities, I know how creepy it can be even when you are not in a "rough" part of town, but at wee hours of the morning, college campuses can be semi sketchy!

for keeping your cool! That would be why your the teacher! I really don't understand some parents. She shouldn't have been allowed to walk that far and ALONE! Thank goodness all is well. -

Ugh. Agreed - the mom should NOT have let her daughter walk. Even in the NICEST of neighborhoods, doesn't matter - FREAKS are EVERYWHERE and if they see an opportunity and are willing to carry out the act, they will. VERY scary. The other thing is - when the mom showed up, you'd think she'd KNOW her daughter was doing an internship at the theatre down the road.. wouldn't you think she'd want to check there??? Time to get her daughter a cell phone. BTW, tell that 15 yr old she has a good head on her shoulders!!! I'm impressed!!! At 15, I was too busy hating my parents and trying to figure out how to sneak out of the house at night to help with homeless shelters!!!!!
