So...about this music stuff.....

Post by CAMary »

So I mentioned how awful today's music is in a previous thread....Mike & I laugh that the groups touring now are the same groups from 25 years ago since that garbage young people listen to now serves no purpose being performed live (like Mike says - is the guitar now extinct or what?!)

So our recently-turned 9 year old is starting to get into music - he wanted an MP3 player for his birthday. Mike is "corrupting" him by exposing him to rock and roll before his peers influence him with rap   So we've loaded up his player with Van Halen, The Stones, Eric Clapton etc...

So we'll see....

My 14 year old has an Ipod and purchases music from the Itunes website. I have to review and approve all the music before she buys it. :banned: She was so excited about a "band" she had found, Van Halen! Hahahaha!

I had her make a CD for me of all the songs she has on her IPOD and I listen to it. I enjoy most of it, she has pretty good taste!

Hey, It DOES work - influencing the kids about good music, that is. We are living proof. Our 18 year old is a classic rock fan and always has been - in fact, he is disdainful of boy bands and pop singers. He believes that a band must actually play instruments and compose original music to be classified as musicians. He heard Van Halen live in concert last spring. This year we allowed him to go to Bonnaroo (a Woodstock-type event in Tennessee last month - check out the website if you are interested) with friends. The highlight of that trip for him was seeing the Allman Brothers band perform. He also likes jazz, bluegrass, etc.

Love,

Polly

Music

Post by Momster »

Yes, we can be an influence on our children. Peggy likes a lot of the same music as I do and when she was little was listening to The Who, Rolling Stones, Phil Collins, etc and we even went to s Phil Collins concert together.

Nice that we can enjoy the same tunes. It's fun when we go on a trip together and crank the tunes on the cd player and sing along.

I got John an MP3 player for his birthday and am busy downloading music for him to put on it before his birthday. He likes Western music (ugh), but I'm being faithful and finding the music he likes.

Love - Momster

This conversation is just toooo funny!

Both of my girls grew up listening to Classic Rock! My husband was a "bad" influence on them too! hahahhaa

They are still listening to Classic Rock, by choice not by demand. They are 26 and ! Crack me up! :music:

Ha ha. I'm laughing at this because, I am a product of the 80s, and listened to what was on the radio then...and in Vermont we didn't have the plethora of station choices...it was WCFR or nothing (which ironically, where I live now comes in on the phone lines because we are very close to the transmission tower).

My Mom however, grew up in a household where it was Bach and Beethoven or nothing! She still doesn't like much but classical. Now I like classical, but it took until I was in college to learn about 60s groups to a greater extent (other than those few classics that any style radio station will play). When I started listening to that stuff in college, my dad started listening to it again to an extent as well.

I already have my kids (ages 5 and 6) singing Bob Marley tunes every day to and from work :) It's just about all I listen to these days - but I'm like that. I used to listen to JUST ONE TAPE until it broke. Now that CDs are around that won't happen :) I've gone from Doors, to Eagles, to Def Leppard. They all rock. I love Van Halen (mostly OLDer tunes), Led Zeppelin - but then, I also love alternative rock. I absolutely HATE POP. Britney Spears SUCKS. She can't SING, she can't DANCE, apparently all she can do is work out and look muscular because other than that, she's ugly! Where is the attraction people????

I DO like rap tho. I know they don't make up their own music, but I LOVE the beat, the bass, their voices..

My 2 cents!!!!

Wow, this is funny. I introduced my kids to Pink Floyd and Eric Clapton and Creedence and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and sometimes Young and the Blues and like that. Now you would think they invented it!!

Today's music sucks. I would venture to say, it's even vile. At first I thought I was just getting old, but from everybody I see on tour, they are just as old as I am. And still going strong.

Even, Oscar, who is painting my bathrooms and is about 28 thinks today's music is bad. Yesterday he was in painting and I put EC on the stereo. He came running out and said TURN IT UP!! We both danced to "After Mindnight" for a few minutes. It was hilarious.

And don't forget Jimmy Buffet. He's an old guy, too. When is he going to write "A Pirate Turns Seventy?" :band:

Lots of love,

Sally

I have to agree about todays music being crap. Unfortunately my older daughter, about to turn 13 doesn't have very good taste in music and is too influenced by media and other kids her age. I would have thought by all the music that my wife and I listen to that she would have some taste as well.

I just had to put in my two cents worth ! I agree, I agree, I agree !

And ~ Christine,

I really agree with your comments about Brittney Spears ~ and I would have to add quite a few more to that list, but, so many names, so little time !!!

Well I'm almost embarrassed to most what I listen to, but what the heck - if we can share stories about our bowel habits we can certainly share music! I do, and have FOR MANY YEARS, listened to Tom Jones and Barry Manilow. I'm like someone else on here - I'll listen to the same tape/CD over and over and over. Heck, I don't really know what's been on the radio for the past 20 years because I always only play my own tunes! I've loved TJ since I was 10 and still do - seen him in concert over 30 times. And I became a HUGE Barry fan in the 70's, but in the 90's when he started switching to all that "Big Band" stuff he really lost me. He's slowly getting me back now that he's giving us what we like again, but good ol' Tom Jones never lets me down. Even my kids like his modern songs and he performs with some really popular, hip groups. And yes, we can influence our kids. My kids have been going to TJ concerts with me all their lives, and even though they are now 20 and 22, they STILL want to go. As a matter of fact, we're all seeing him at Mohegan Sun arena this Thursday.

There. Now you know. I'm an old fuddy dud. But if it's any redemption, I also love the Stones and Eric Clapton!

In my day, we were groovin' to Johnny Mathis. Yup, everytime we got on an elevator! If you'll notice next time, he's still in there!
