Saltine
"A saltine or soda cracker is a thin, usually square cracker made from white flour, shortening, yeast, and baking soda, with some varieties lightly sprinkled with coarse salt." from Wikipedia (I think.)
We have to avoid white flour (and other flour).............I eat rice crackers by Edwards.
I am controlling my symptoms by a gluten/casein/soy free diet alone. No Entocort or Lialda which are the two meds my GI was going to have me choose between before I found this site.

Brenda,
As Joan pointed out, regular "saltines" are loaded with gluten. You can get crackers made from rice flour at most health food stores. The most popular, (and best tasting, IMO), are distributed by Edwards & Sons, (as Joan mentioned). They're called "Rice Snaps, and they come in several flavors. I haven't eaten them in a while, but as I recall, I preferred the "Onion Garlic", and the "Unsalted Plain" flavors, because they taste great, and usually, the fewer ingredients a product has, the less likely we are to react to it.

I see that they've added a few new flavors since I last checked the site. Note that at least one of them contains dairy products, several contain soy, and some contain citric acid, so be sure to read the label before you buy some of the more exotic flavors.
Some of us can eat peanut butter without any problems, while others can't. When I was healing, it didn't necessarily give me D, but it always gave me a tummy ache, for some reason or other. Almond butter is another product that can be found in health food stores, that some people can tolerate better than peanut butter. Be aware that most mainstream peanut butters contain soy. There are some available without it, though, usually described as "natural" peanut butters. Smuckers, for example makes one, and there are numerous smaller brands available. Most of the "natural" butters do not contain hydrogenized oils, so the oil will rise to the top, while they are stored. To prevent having to re-mix the ingredients every time you want to use it, just store it upside down in your refrigerator, so that the oil will be on the bottom, when you turn it rightside up.
Whether or not to take Entocort is a personal decision that you will have to determine for yourself, since we are all different, and have different attitudes about various meds. Most people can take it without any serious problems, but a few encounter problems of various types, and can't tolerate it, or have unacceptable side effects. It seems to be the most effective "safe" med available for treating MC, (and the other IBDs, for that matter), and it's effective in controlling the D that comes with MC in about 60 to 70% of cases, on the average.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
I have spread my rice crackers with olive oil and rosemary and put them in the oven for a short while. YUM.
I even just dip them in lemon flavored olive oil with salt. I wish they would make plain salted crackers because I'm afraid to eat all their flavored ones.

Third try, hopefully, the charm
Tex, I think the spell checker is freezing up my computer!
Bren, you are very welcome. I was in your shoes only 7 months ago so I do know how overwhelming it all is to you. Hang in there, we are all here to help.
BTW, I am not on any meds "just" eliminating gluten, casein and soy from my diet.
Prepare for sticker shock at the HF store.

Joan,
What do you mean? Just when you use it, or every time you try to post? I just tried it, twice, and it worked fine, using the "Quick Reply" form. Are you using the "Quick Reply" form, or the original "postreply" button?

Joan, you are so right. wow! $5.00 for bread crumbs. I guess I have to "choose" what I can live without. so I got a nana's gluten free cookie and was in heaven eating it, haha
I have already gone to the bathroom 3x's this morning and I havent even eaten breakfast yet...this is so unpleasant! it seems to have gotten worse since I found out I have it. This all started Thanksgiving night, which the dr's thought it was the flu for 4 weeks..(they are so clueless) it seems now, my diet has gotten so scarce as to what I can eat. its like this "monster" in me is getting pickier to my diet. no dairy, now no "honey bunches of oats" which I LOVED!
I dont know about you guys, but part of me feels so cheated! I was thinking of summer last night, and how sometimes we go for an ice cream..well thats done for me, and how Christmas was such a blur of "just looking" at cheesecake that my husband makes once a year and cant even have that! I'm angry in a way.
we want to go away next month for a night, and what do you or "can" you eat in restaurants now? plain chicken? I think Im getting depressed with this disease and Im angry!!!!!!!!!

I know exactly how you feel. There's no doubt about it, it's life altering. I told my friends that I never said "why me" when I got breast cancer, but I sure say it about MC. If diet helps the D, it's worth all the sacrifices, I'd say.
Eating out is tough. The easiest meal is steak and potato but I have high cholesterol. I have found, through a nice waitress at Outback Steakhouse, that they DO have an unseasoned chicken breast so that's what I eat there. A little olive oil on the potato is good. I use it and ghee (thanks, Gloria) at home.
