I think a New Intolerance
Morning All,
I think I am now in the ranks of one more intolerance - corn. I have had troubles with it all my life and I think now that corn syrup is one thing that is being added to my MI list. I have had a bad couple of weeks and it seems that the common thread is products with corn syrup. Still researching it but the pains after eating it has sent up the red flag. The list of food I can eat is getting smaller and smaller.
Love, Maggie

Maggie,
I'm so sorry to hear about corn. As Polly says, it might be as hard or harder than gluten to avoid, it's in darn near everything! Watch out for citric acid, it is almost always made from corn and I know I react to it.
Of course, it will be worth giving up corn it if you feel better.

Oh Mags!
Real bummer! But it has seemed all along that you are majorly MI -very much like me. The only silver lining - once you discover and remove all offenders, you will no longer be a slave to the D!
Here is my current list of no-nos: gluten, dairy, soy, yeast, corn, chocolate, citrus, tomatoes, and carrageenan. I know you have trouble with eggplant and peppers too. I may, but haven't tried them in a long time - not since I discovered the tomato problem. Let's hope our favorite staple, the potato, remains safe for us!
Did you check out Jean's list of corn derivatives in the Info on Diet Forum?

That is the pits! You have always been so disciplined, and I would love for you to be able to let go and eat some fun stuff - alot of which has corn in it! Can you still eat Reece's PB Cups or do they have corn?
I can't remember if chocolate is also bad for you.
I feel almost guilty having to deal with only gluten.
Say hi to Frank for us. Now that we've got dad here, maybe Bruce and I can take a trip to somewhere other than Mn. Like PA!

Hi Maggie,
Corn too?! Yes, I react to it too. It is almost impossible to find processed foods w/o corn/corn derivatives but there ARE some treats that we can have. I am still finding a new one every now and then - let us know if you need some help in this department.
Like Polly said - being D-free is priceless and you won't miss corn anymore once you experience life w/o D. I wouldn't trade it in for anything.

Karen

Maggie,
Sorry to hear about your corn problem- I understand, I appear to be having problems with it too.
Still a newbie here finding my way through a maze of intolerants I seem to have. MC sucks, it just plain sucks.
What a great group here to share with though. Hang in there.
Love,
Joanna

Maggie and Joanna,
Really sorry to hear that you are both are having problems with corn.
It's a real bummer I know. Wish I had a magic wand to "fix" all of us so we could whatever we wanted.
Barbara,
You may decide you'd much rather drive to AZ than fly. At least you can take your time and even stop over at places of interest if you like.
We never do but I think it would be so nice if we did -
Love, Shirley

Morning All,
PB cups have been out for a while.
Am still trying to discern if corn is the problem, but I am sure 99% sure it is.
Barbara - drive it is so much more fun.
Alice - the door is always open except 8/11 to 8/29 when we go to England.
Polly - Here's hoping potatoes are not next - they are my staff of life.
Love, Maggie

Aha!!!
Citric acid is derived from corn eh? Do you think that here in the US that is the primary source or could it be from others? I think I am sensitive to corn syrup as well because I get a hankering for something sweet so I ate some Edy's strawberry sorbet and my gut was aching somewhat and I see that it contains high fructose corn syrup and that may be a biggie for me. Yeast intolerance and sweets make it worse.

Maggie,
I found an incredible relief when I removed it from my daily diet (corn syrup) but I'm starting to think it's not the CORN, it's the complex sugars like corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, etc. I have eaten corn on the cob and corn chips with NO reaction. I guess I'm just suggesting don't give up on corn yet!!! Eliminate all corn products, then try an experiment by reintroducing a corn product that is NOT containing corn syrup or HFCS. See if you get a reaction :)

Corn is the preferred feedstock for citric acid production, and many other derivatives, because it is THE low cost feedstock. Nothing can beat if for competitive pricing.
This is not due to the lobbying efforts of the corn growers, but rather, much to their chagrin, due to the low price of corn, because of abundant supplies. Corn brings roughly the same price per bushel, in real dollars, as it did about 30 years ago. Considering all the inflation we have had in those three decades, that makes corn an incredible bargain. It's no wonder it's used for so many things.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
