What's your typical MC day?
How does MC typically hit you during the day? Are you awakened by the need to rush to the bathroom? Does it typically hit after you eat? If so, how long after you eat? Does it just happen all day long for you? Do you have it one day but seem ok the next?
What's your experience?

Wow, I can't really help you that much with that question because I have controlled the symptoms with meds since shortly after being diagnosed.
Prior to that I seemed to have an "attack" every 2-3 days. Probably spaced out because I was afraid to eat for a day or two after one. Haha
I would start with very bad nausea, then vomiting & dry heaves, then the D would start. The whole process lasted pretty much all night.
In between, I might have "accidents" which didn't involve a lot of output but still quite embarrasing.
Don't know if this helps but the best I can do.
Love, Shirley

am an *old-bee* vacationing--but I check into see some of the posts--
when I was MC'ing I ran all the time to the *throne*-----didnt matter what I ate--what I didnt eat--when the urge came I ran--
I would no sooner lay me down ---then I was up and running--continuously!!!!! thanks to a new GI--I have a life----had to be treated aggressively--but it was worth it---just to know I was able to go out without that partner *fear* walking with me--
I am now in remisssion---now my problem is Constipation due to back surgery!!
We all have such amazing stories----

Hi Sunshine,
I've been in remission for about 5 years now, but I had reactions for 4 or 5 years before I was able to control my symptoms by diet changes. My reactions were sort of like Shirley's. They would begin with bloating, aches and pains, nausea, and some times vomiting, for a day or two, and then the D would start, and I would have several days of that. Usually, after the D began to slow down, the bloating would go away, and I would have C for about a week or maybe 10 days or so, and then the cycle would start over again.
When I was having D, I rarely had to get up during the night, but it would usually wake me up early, and I would have a couple of sessions of D before I left the house to go to work. I would have one or two more during the morning, (usually before mid-morning), and then after I ate dinner, (at noon-my biggest meal of the day is at noon), I would usually have another D episode within a matter of minutes to maybe a half-hour after eating. After that, about half the time, I would have a mid-afternoon session, and other than that, I would usually be OK until about dark or so, and somewhere between dark and bedtime, I would have one final round for the day. IOW, I would usually have about 5 or 6 sessions per day, though occasionally I might have 7 or 8, on a bad day.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
my symptoms almost always were between 7am-2-3pm. At its worse I would have to go at least 10-15x per day. That lasted for 5 or 6 months before being diagnosed. Since then I have gone GF, dairy, and sugar free. Most of my syptoms are under control, except for pain and gas/bloating from time to time. I recently went back to work after being off for several months for an unrelated problem, and I have experienced some D and cramps. It is possible that is stress aggravating on the MC. Definately for me its am to mid-afternoon.
Sunshine,
My experience with cc is all over the place. It is generally worse in the am right when I get up until mid morning and then again mid afternoon and usually through the night, esp when I first go to bed. I get d daily with bouts from 15 to 25 times a day. It can be from mush to brown water with undigested food. I usually get nauseated after I eat breakfast and dinner, cramping, pain, gurgling (the big flush), you name it. I usually have to wear a diaper to bed b/c of the fecal incontinence (sometimes I sleep right through it). I have taken all the meds with no relief, they just seem to make it worse. Entocort worked, but the s/e were worse than living in the bathroom.
I just try to live day to day, a really good day is going under 10 times (which are rare).

I am still trying to figure out all my intolerances and taking Diflucan for yeast overgrowth. Mine started almost 10 years ago, I've had massive water D with cramping up to 20 times per day. Some of that I attribute to Drs giving me antibiotics. They always made it worse. The D is daily 24/7 never normal or C. Eating doesn't matter, I have it whether I have eaten or not. I almost always have episodes in the night.

What a great question! It's good for us to all be able compare our experiences.
I have had D symptoms for about six years now. When it first started, it was just D first thing in the morning, and sometimes at other times of the day, but I could control it and chalked my symptoms up to stress and IBS, just like my GIs. About two and a half years ago it got much worse, and I started having incontinence (usually first thing in the morning when I couldn't get to the bathroom in time).
Now, I usually wake up early with D and have one or two sessions first thing in the morning (6:00-8:00am). I'm usually okay during the day (usually--I sometimes do have problems), but then I spend about an hour in the bathroom right before bed (9:00-11:00pm, depending). I have noticed that, in general, the incontinence issues have improved since I went GF and CF last fall and SF, CF, EF, YF about a month ago. I sometimes still have leaks, but I'm hoping this is some minor improvement and not all in my imagination. That's a typical day. Some days are worse, and a very few are better.

Sunshine,
I am very new to this condition. Mine started about the first week in January, and I just went to the toilet and had a large watery stool one evening, and it did not stop after that 5-12 times a day including 2-3 times at night. I am lucky because I have not had any incontenence, but have come close a few times. I was diagnosed about 6 weeks after symptoms started and had no luck with meds yet, but all I have tried is Asacol. I started the "guts and glory diet 3 weeks ago and have had some great success. I was completely d free for 1 week with some constipation which is a very new experience to me since the only time I have ever been constipated was when I was pregnant. I started adding new foods to my diet the last few days and even went out to PF Chang's last night and ate from the gf menu, and since I have had two small bouts of D. When My symtpoms were at its worst, I would go 3-4 times in the early am, always watery with lots of gas and cramping, then I would have a reprive until about 4-5 pm then I would have 1-2 watery d, and it never failed I would have 1-3 more before I went to bed no matter what time that was. I also developed this weird flank pain when my symptoms were at it's worse, but I don't think I had any other achs. I agree with the stress, I am still in the greiving process of this whole thing, and yesterday I had another breakdown feeling bad because I can't seem to get back to where I want to be as fast as I want, expecially with my exercise. That may have been what set off the last two bouts of D.

Hi Sunshine,
3-5 times during the morning (after I wake up), then usually nothing at all till the next morning. Somedays I might get a few during the afternoon/evening as well, but that is uncommon.
Severity is determined less by frequency and more by quality - how secretory it is. A mild case will only just qualify as D, a bad case is totally liquid (except for the vegies) and much greater volume.
Last few weeks I have flared on the weekend and settled down during the week. That is probably a food trigger I haven't found yet. Exercise is also a trigger and I can't run for more than 10 minutes without it starting.
So how are you going? We clearly differ a lot in our patterns.

Mornin' Sunshine!
Great question! My gut has always been my "target organ". Whenever I would get stressed, even as a child, I would have to go poop. I joke that I won't ever have a heart attack.....because all of my stress goes immediately to my gut.
I have read that most MCers can remember the first time it hit. I sure do. I had a full cart of groceries and was standing in line for the cashier when the urge hit. I barely made it to the bathroom before the explosion. I felt so awful with the bloating/gurgling/etc. that I left the full cart and went home.
Prior to remission I would have up to 8-10 episodes a day. Usually I was OK overnight, with the D starting first thing in the morning and occurring sporadically throughout the day. I never knew when it would hit, so I quickly learned the location of all of the public restrooms in a 10 mile radius.
Often eating would trigger the D (the old "gastrocolic reflex"). For some reason I rarely had D when I exercised.
Love,
Polly

Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.
Thanks...it seems that most of you have worse trouble in the morning? I usually can get through morning ok, eating a small breakfast and a small lunch. But as soon as I eat dinner, I'm in the bathroom several times over the next couple of hours. Does it seem to you that the act of eating starts it right away for you?
Being overheated or dehydrated also seems to set it off. That obviously puts a "cramp" in trying to exercise!
I am rarely awakened by it, but am occasionally, usually in the very early morning.

KD,
You mentioned that you had 2 bouts of D after eating at P.F. Chang's. I had a similar experience the last time I ate there (in early January). It is fairly rare for me to be awakened with D during the night, but after I had dinner there, I was up 3 times in one night. In my own case, I suspect that the soy in the food set that off, since I later found out I am intolerant to soy. But then again, I had consumed soy at other times and had not had such a severe reaction. It could have been that Chinese food tends to contain more soy than other foods, or it could be something else at the restaurant that is a problem for some MCers. YMMV, but I wanted to let you know the same thing happened to me.
