Hi Angie,

At least that's over, except for the waiting for the results to get back from the pathologist.

Unfortunately, it doesn't sound as though that exam is going to provide any information about the burning pain that you have been having. Is that pain located just below the rib cage, or is it farther down?

Angie,

The midriff can be considered to be anywhere from the waist, all the way up to, and including, part of the rib cage. That's a very broad area, and without pinpointing the location of the pain to a much smaller area, there's no way to even make a guess at what the cause of the pain might be, because the midriff area includes a lot of internal organs.

Ah! That's what I suspected. That sounds like gastritis - your stomach is inflamed. Your GI doc should have done an upper endoscopy when you were there for the colonoscopy, because he needs to take biopsy samples of the lower part of your stomach, (the gastric antrum), to see if you have an H. pylori infection. He can also have you do a breath test, to check for H. pylori, but the biopsies would be a more reliable way to go about it, of course.

If you are taking any NSAIDs, such as aspirin, or ibuprofen, (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin, etc.), they are probably causing the problem, and if you stop taking them, the burning will probably go away. Alcohol can also cause that problem.

If you're not taking any NSAIDs or alcohol, though, then you should be able to get some temporary relief by taking an antacid, or an acid blocker. Over-the-counter antacids such as Maalox, Mylanta, etc., might work. If not, you might need a prescription acid blocker, such as cimetidine, (Tagamet), nizatidine, Axid) or famotidine, (Pepcid). Ranitidine, (Zantac), might also work, but it has been shown to trigger MC, for some patients. Another option is to take a proton pump inhibitor, such as omeprazole, (Prilosec), rabeprazole, (Aciphex), or esomeprazole, (Nexium). Lansoprazole, (Prevacid), might also work, but it has also been shown to trigger MC. In fact, there is a slight risk that any of these meds might trigger MC, so the safest route is to check for H. phlori first, and if there is an infection, control it with antibiotics, and that should resolve the problem.

Hi Angy,

No, the Tylex should be quite safe for someone with MC. It is the only OTC painkiller that is not an NSAID. Here in the States, we call it Tylenol, but it is not available here with the codeine, OTC, the way it is in the UK and Canada.

If your GI doc took biopsy samples from your colon, during either a colonoscopy, or a sigmoidoscopy, and a pathologist determined, (after examining the slides prepared from the samples, under a microscope), that your biopsy samples show the markers for either CC, or LC, (or both), then you definitely do have MC. If you have an H. pylori infection, that would be an additional condition, and it probably has nothing to do with the MC, (though it would certainly add to the symptoms, of course). An H. pylori infection is strictly confined to the stomach, while MC is a disease of the colon.

You're very welcome,

hi angie..

i guess some foods other than gf ones still give me heartburn etc..cant tolerate anything with skins on...raw veggies and fruits. Onions are a killer for me, give me serious burning and gas although i never eat them now...
i was prescribed cimitidine for a few years before dx with cc, that was really good for the burning i have to say, but doc said i shouldnt take it with mesalazine...i have occassionaly though when ive been desperate...gaviscon usually works but its never enough.. ...ive had a UTI infection twice over the past month and this cause my cc to flare causing the usual symptoms...gas etc..I went to docs today because i needed an emergency appointment for more antibiotics....that dam infection is back after 2wks off antibiotics...its doing my head in...never had a bad sick record with work up until now

its still a journey for me with food and this is now 2 yrs down the line...im very strict with my diet and have had flares with that too. Its an onging nightmare at times...

i suggest avoiding all spicy foods...gf diet and loads of probiotics...yoghurts if you are not lactose intolerant. If you are intolerant try to get probiotics in capsules but buy the ones out of the chilled cabinet..if you can..

hope you feel better soon angie..
